I had the opportunity to review Money Secrets of the Amish: Finding True Abundance in Simplicity, Sharing and Saving - even though this book is published by Thomas Nelson, it is not full of Bible verses ? it is a book about the Amish and the ways of their money and thinking.
The author spends time visiting the Amish community learning how they think about finances.? She also spends time learning about those who have daily contact with the Amish, but are not Amish ? like a banker.? She uses this as a springboard to explore other areas ? like that of her life or her friends ? for instance she contrasts her life to the Amish: she wanted to ?treat herself? and that meant an $80 pair of shoes?but for the Amish, a ?luxury? would be a box of Ritz crackers.
The principles in the book are about more than just money ? things like delayed gratification and?thinking long term are just a couple of examples.? Its? also a book on reflecting on society now verses how things were.? For instance, it talks about some Amish working a farm for 20 years and raising 14 kids?and saving $400,00 which was then put toward a larger farm?to be for the future generations, not just the current one.
