Sikh temple attack united victim's son, ex-racist

OAK CREEK, Wis. (AP) ? Six weeks after a white supremacist gunned down Pardeep Kaleka's father and five others at a Sikh temple last year, Kaleka was skeptical when a former skinhead reached out and invited him to dinner.

But Kaleka accepted, and he's grateful he did. Since then, the grieving son and repentant racist have formed an unlikely alliance, teaming up to preach a message of peace throughout Milwaukee. In fact, they've grown so close that they got matching tattoos on their palms ? the numbers 8-5-12, the date the gunman opened fire at a Milwaukee-area Sikh temple before killing himself minutes later.

It wasn't easy for Kaleka to meet Arno Michaelis, a 42-year-old who admits he contributed so heavily to the white-power movement that he might have helped influence the shooter. Kaleka knows Michaelis' history ? his lead singing in a white supremacist band, the white-power and swastika tattoos, the countless fights and more than a dozen arrests.

But he also saw the good work Michaelis has done since he quit the racist movement in the mid-1990s. Kaleka, 37, wanted his father's death to be a catalyst for peace, and he saw in Michaelis a partner whose story could reinforce the message that it's possible to turn hate into love.

"We were both hoping ... we could take something tragic and turn it into something positive ? a learning experience for the entire community," Kaleka said. "We were both on that same mission, in our different ways."

Michaelis had written a book called "My Life After Hate," in which he describes how he lashed out at the world starting in kindergarten and how the birth of his daughter made him realize he needed to change. He also works with kids on community service projects.

Kaleka still has lingering fears that Michaelis might relapse and return to his old ways. But as he's gotten to know Michaelis, he says the boulder of doubt has become a pebble.

Michaelis, an information technology consultant, understands the skepticism. He knows he hurt so many people during his seven years in the white-supremacy movement that his sincerity will always be questioned, which is why he works even harder to regain people's trust.

The two men have teamed up to create Serve2Unite, a community group that works to counter violence with peace. Kaleka, Michaelis and others visit middle schools and high schools, where Kaleka describes how gunman Wade Michael Page walked into the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin last year and killed six people he didn't know. Then Michaelis describes how the gunman's white-supremacist background was nearly identical to his own.

Invariably, the children are riveted, Kaleka said. Afterward several will come up and ask how they can get involved.

Kaleka and Michaelis look nothing alike. Kaleka is a clean-cut Indian who teaches high school social studies. Michaelis, who's white, has both arms covered in tattoos that mask earlier racist messages. But as they sat together in the temple recently, just down the hallway from the bedroom where Kaleka's father was shot, they seemed like brothers, insulting each other good-naturedly and arguing over who was more handsome.

That brotherhood began at their first dinner. Sitting in his car outside the restaurant, Kaleka watched Michaelis walk inside and wondered if he was crazy to be meeting with a former skinhead. Still, he summoned the courage to do it.

Michaelis immediately asked about a bandage on Kaleka's eye, the temporary remnant of a mishap Kaleka suffered while bathing his daughter.

"There was no, 'Hi, how you doing?' He went straight from seeing me to showing concern," Kaleka said. After Kaleka told him what happened, Michaelis admitted that he too was a klutz, and a friendship was born.

Michaelis doesn't shy away from discussing his past. He grew up in an alcoholic, emotionally cold household. He began to rebel as early as kindergarten, bullying other kids on the bus and picking fights on the playground. He eventually got into the white-power movement for the shock value, but the more he associated with haters, the more he began to hate.

But hating was exhausting. He couldn't watch Green Bay Packers games because black and white players were playing together. He couldn't watch TV because Hollywood was a Jewish conspiracy. He loved "Seinfeld" but he had to record it on a videotape labeled "Amber's second birthday party" so his white-power friends wouldn't know he thought a Jew was hilarious.

Eventually, the combination of his daughter's birth and a friend dying in a street fight was the catalyst for him to move on.

His past never really left him, though. When he heard that the gunman who killed six people at a Sikh temple was a white supremacist, he lay awake that night agonizing that the gunman might have been someone he'd recruited into the white-power movement or inspired as the lead singer of the hate band Centurion. It turns out he hadn't known Page but he still felt responsible for his actions.

"We were both white-power skinheads. We were both in white-power bands," Michaelis said. "In just about every sense, I used to be him."

That's why his message now is one of peace. He tells kids they're not being tough when they counter aggression with aggression ? what takes real strength is walking away. He acknowledges that his younger self would have ignored that message, but he still hopes to make a difference with a new generation.

Connecting with children became so much easier after he and Kaleka teamed up. When kids hear from someone who used to be a violent hater, and then from someone whose father fell victim to that very hatred, the message is sobering.

"We realized the reason this (temple shooting) happens is that we magnify the differences between people. We don't magnify the similarities," Kaleka said. "So one of our main goals is to magnify those similarities and say, 'Hey, I'm not so different from you. So let's come together in a common cause."

Android Captures Record 80 Percent Share of Global Smartphone Shipments in Q2 2013

Written by Strategy Analytics ??
Friday, 02 August 2013

'); document.write(''); // -->

BOSTON, Aug. 1, 2013 --?According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global smartphone shipments grew 47 percent annually to reach 230 million units in the second quarter of 2013. Android captured a record 80 percent share all smartphone volumes worldwide, while Microsoft solidified its position in third place.

Scott Bicheno, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics, said, "Global smartphone shipments grew 47 percent annually from 156.5 million units in Q2 2012 to 229.6 million in Q2 2013. Growth was driven by strong demand for Android models across all price-tiers in developed and developing markets, such as the US, China and Brazil. Android now accounts for an impressive 8 in 10 of all smartphones shipped on the planet."

Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, added, "The Android operating system captured a record 80 percent share of all smartphones shipped worldwide in the second quarter of 2013. Competitive licensing costs, numerous hardware partners and a large apps store continue to be among the main drivers of Android's success. Apple iOS reached 14 percent global smartphone share in the quarter, its lowest level since Q2 2010. Microsoft slotted into third position with 4 percent share, reaching its highest level in the global smartphone market for three years."

Linda Sui, Analyst at Strategy Analytics, added, "Microsoft is making steady progress in the smartphone market due to strong support from Nokia. However, we believe Microsoft's WP8 platform still needs to improve in at least two areas before it truly takes off. And second, Microsoft must dramatically accelerate its support for advanced technologies, such as octo-core chipsets, because WP8 continues to lag behind Android in the premium smartphone category."

'Lost' star Andrews relishes 'Wonderland' change

(AP) ? Naveen Andrews says he welcomed the transition from a movie about Princess Diana to a TV series inspired by "Alice in Wonderland."

The former "Lost" star plays the villainous Jafar in ABC's fall series "Once Upon a Time in Wonderland." In the upcoming big-screen "Diana," starring Naomi Watts, Andrews plays love interest Dr. Hasnat Khan.

Andrews said that after "Diana" the "Wonderland" TV series offered a chance to do something completely different that, as he put it, isn't "bound in space and time." He spoke Sunday to the Television Critics Association.

"Once Upon a Time in Wonderland" stars Sophie Lowe as a young woman who escapes Victorian England down the fabled rabbit hole in search of adventure and love. It debuts Oct. 10.

UNICEF Supply Annual Report 2012 : India is the Largest Supplier

UNICEF recently released its Supply Annual Report for 2012. The Report is an yearly assessment of the UNICEF supply programme which provides women and children with an equitable access to life-saving supplies. The?UNICEF Supply Division recently moved its base to Copenhagen, Denmark with a state of the art warehouse to ensure timely reach of life-saving supplies all over the world. Its activities in influencing markets, innovation and supporting supply chain strengthening continued apace during the year, with substantial achievements in terms of reduced prices, reduced supply chain costs and the introduction of new products. Regarding encouraging innovation, the program has several innovation projects in the pipeline. These are mainly aimed at development of low-cost diagnostic devices that make accurate diagnosis under extreme environmental conditions.?

UNICEF procured $1.86 billion worth of supplies globally for children and women during the year. In addition, $608 million worth of services were procured. The major commodities procured were: vaccines, pharmaceuticals, nutrition, medical supplies and equipment, international freight, bed nets, construction, water and sanitation, education, printed educational supplies. Vaccines accounted for $1053 million, and pharmaceuticals trailed at $226 million.

India was the largest supplier country in 2012, with ?$558 million worth of services and supplies. Belgium came in second, contributing less than half of India's supplies with a figure of $349 million. Serum Institute of India Ltd supplied vaccines/biologicals worth $254 million dollars, making it the largest supplier in India. Mylan Laboratries (pharma company) is at?a distant second spot, with supplies worth $ 45 million. Other significant suppliers are Ranbaxy Labs, Hetero Labs, Aurobindo Pharma, Haffkine Bio-Pharmaceutical Corporation, Biological E and Micro Labs Pharma. UNICEF makes great efforts to buy supplies where they are used. Almost two-thirds of the top 33 supplier countries are countries where UNICEF has development programmes.

Close to two-thirds of the UNICEF supplies delivered went to Sub-Saharan Africa. 24% of the supplies went to Southern and Eastern Asia, and the Pacific. India absorbed commodities worth $23 million and procured services worth $52 million. India's neighbours Pakistan and Bangladesh used supplies worth $231?million and $64 million respectively.?

India has consistently been the largest supplier since 2007. UNICEF has recognised India's contribution to glocal aid, and international groups have lauded India's role in increasing access to medicines in the developing world. In fact, India is not only the largest supplier to UN groups, but also to the M?decins Sans Frontieres (MSF) and International Dispensary Association. Indian medicines are also extremely affordable. Anti RetroViral (ARV) treatment in Europe was $10,000 per patient a year, until Indian manufactured drugs brought it down to $95 patient a year. India happens to be the largest supplier of generic ARVs to low and middle income countries. Paul Cawthome (MSF Access Campaign Coordinator-Asia)?highlighted the the worldwide dependency on India as a drug supplier best, when he said : 'It comes as a great relief to millions around the world who depend on a continuous supply of Indian generic medicines that the Indian Supreme Court has ruled against Novartis.' In another instance, when Big pharma threatened legal action against the South African government in the latter's efforts to bring down prices for HIV-AIDS treatment, Indian pharma major Cipla stepped in and offered to supply drugs at just $350 per patient per year. This exposed inflated rates of medicines in the global market, and the case against SA government was withdrawn.?

These scenarios demonstrate India's inclination to increase global accessibility to medicines. Hopefully the efforts will also be emulated by other nations in the wake of rising healthcare costs, especially in the developed countries.

Bridging Finance is referred as bridge loans. And it has nothing to do with the construction work of any bridge. It is simply a way to minimize the economical problem between two transactions. Generally these are short term loan and carries high interest rate. These are easily available and neither these requires any credit record. Off-course there are some preliminary conditions like you need to be of 18 years age, should have a regular source of income and something worthy that can be kept as security.
These loans are used to supply cash mainly for sectors like real estate. The borrower can seek help from the lenders until the permanent financing is not arranged. Hope the word bridge is now clear, it is just to overcome temporary obstacle.

Uses of Bridging Finance
A distinctive use for a bridge loan comes when there is a gap of sale and purchase between two real estate properties. For example, consider a company who want to shift to new office building before closing the old one, from where the money will come. The company will proceed towards the financer who will provide them the bridging loan. The money of the loan will be paid when the old office is sold. This mode of financial help allows having two properties at a time.
Bridging Finance always requires that you vow collateral as security. This is done against the financial help you get from the lender and somewhat it is important too because lenders need a sense of security for the money he is spending. However, if you have outstanding business good record of personal credit, wonderful relationship with the lender, you will be able to get the cash with just a signature.

The need of bridging finance often arises suddenly and that too without warning, it is always suggested that one should have good relationship with the lender. This will help you get pre approved loans. The time span of these loans lies between 14 days to 2 years depending upon the amount of the money. The terms of the bridge loan can be negotiated too.

Interest Rate Applicable for Bridging Loans
Bridging loans lasts for a short period of time (as compared to other loans). This is the reason why these loans have higher interest rate. Higher rates are the only source of profit for the lenders. Secondly shorter the period of loans more is the interest rate; generally it varies from .05%. There are mainly four factors which decide the loan and its interest rate in general.

• Length of the loan (Time Period)
• The risk involved in the loan,
• Your credit history
• The liquidity and collateral for the amount
Tips to get Best Bet

You are looking for the bridging loan at best possible rates. The only way to crack the answer is to search for the financing company who can offer you the sum at most affordable rates. Search on the internet fill the online form and ask for the quote. Choose the one which suits your need.
