At least 36 people are dead and 11 injured after a tour bus plunged nearly 100 feet down a steep slope in southern Italy on Sunday, local police told NBC News.

The bus reportedly lost control and hit several cars that had been slowed because of traffic before coming to a stop, according to local media.?

Signs warned drivers of slow moving traffic near Avellino, outside of Naples, along the A116 autostrada. But officials say that for reasons unknown the bus lost control, the Italian news agency ANSA said.

The injured include three children, two men and six women, all of whom were transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

The driver is believed to be among the dead, ANSA reported.

About 40 passengers were on board the bus, including children, the news agency said.

"The situation is dramatic," he said, adding that several other vehicles had also been involved in the accident.?

The bus looked as if it had been partially split open, the Associated Press reported.

Rescuers line up the bodies of victims of a bus crash on July 28, 2013 on the road between Monteforte Irpino and Baiano, southern Italy. At least thirty people died and dozens were injured in southern Italy on Sunday when a coach came off a flyover and plunged 30 metres (98 feet) down a slope, according to Italian media.

The rear of one car that was struck by the bus was completely destroyed, and another was smashed on its side. The extent of injuries for those in the cars was unknown.

Passengers aboard the bus were believed to be mostly people faithful returning from a pilgrimage to the southeastern Puglia area, a significant spot for Catholics who admire a monk who was from there.

Many of those on board were from the Campania area around Naples, according to ANSA.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Troicki appeals ban for skipping blood-doping test

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) ? Serbian tennis player Victor Troicki will appeal to sports' highest court to fight his 18-month suspension for failing to provide a blood test.

Troicki says he will trust the Court of Arbitration for Sport to recognize "a clear mistake from the on-site doping control officer."

The 2010 Davis Cup winner says he declined to give blood at the Monte Carlo Masters in April because he felt ill.

Troicki insists the doping control officer advised he could "skip the test if I wrote an explanation letter" to the International Tennis Federation.

The ITF suspended Troicki on Thursday after its tribunal said his explanation "did not constitute compelling justification."

Troicki says of the doping control officer, "once she found out that she didn't follow the procedures, she turned her back on me."

Samsung develops 'world's fastest' embedded memory, first with eMMC 5.0

DNP Samsung develops superfast embedded memory, first with eMMC 50

The evolution of mobile memory chips keeps moving faster, if Samsung's progress is any indication. Not eight months since churning out those speedy eMMC 4.5 chips, and the company's next version of NAND is already here. Indeed, the South Korean company says it's now in mass production of what it deems as the world's fastest embedded memory. The new eMMC PRO chip is based on 64GB 10nm class NAND flash technology and would be the first to support the eMMC 5.0 standard. The chips will be available in the usual 16, 32 and 64GB iterations and feature an interface speed of 400MB/s. The 32 and 64GB densities in particular boast random read and write speeds of 7,000 IOPS (inputs/outputs per second) and sequential read and write speeds of 250MB/s and 90MB/s respectively. What do all of those numbers mean? Well, they should translate to much better performance when it comes to multitasking, browsing, file transfers, HD video capture, gaming and just general computing. Combined with the firm's upcoming Exynos 5 Octa 5420 SoC, and we're chomping at the bit to see them implemented in Samsung's next generation of mobile devices.

Sun Poisoning and How To Avoid It ? The Health Journal: Fitness ...

1 Star2 Stars3 Stars4 Stars5 Stars Loading ...?Loading ...
Don?t let too much of a good thing spoil your summer

Written by?Ann Pietrangelo

Baseball, beach volleyball, gardening, hiking?what?s not to love about a sunshiny summer day? It?s a great idea to get a dose of sunshine every day, but too much of a good thing can hurt. Most experts agree that even one bad sunburn increases your chances of developing skin cancer. Sweltering temperatures can also bring on heat-related illnesses that can quickly become life threatening.

The term ?sun poisoning? is a lay term, according to Sudip K. Bose, M.D., FACEP, FAAEM.? Sun poisoning is an umbrella phrase that refers to severe sunburn, heat exhaustion, dehydration and heat stroke.

Heat stroke occurs when your body temperature soars and cooling mechanisms fail, causing your brain to overheat. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that without emergency treatment, heat stroke can lead to coma, permanent disability or death.

As an attending emergency physician, Dr. Bose sees his share of heat-related emergencies. Patients who present with heat stroke may be unable to move or become comatose. Immediate steps must be taken to cool down the brain and rehydrate the body.?

Risk Factors for Sun Poisoning

?Anybody can get sun poisoning,? cautions Bose, ?but certain medical conditions, medications, or behaviors can make you more susceptible. There are a lot of misconceptions about sunburn and heat-related illness. In summer, sunburn and heat stroke can happen as easily in Chicago as it can in Miami.?

If you think you?re in the clear hanging out by the pool on a cloudy day, think again. That false sense of security may leave you with a painful sunburn. ?We see that a lot,? says Bose.

The elderly are at particular risk of heat exhaustion and classic heat stroke during the hot summer months. Certain medications, especially those that affect blood pressure, heart rate and your ability to perspire can increase risk. Some medications can also make your skin more sensitive to the sun.

Athletes, even those who are in exceptional shape, can suffer heat-related illness if they are not acclimated to a new environment.

Warning Signs of Sun Poisoning

If you can feel the sun burning your skin, it?s time to find some shade or get indoors.?

Symptoms of heat-related illness include:

  • headache
  • lightheadedness, dizziness
  • pain, cramping
  • fever, chills
  • lack of perspiration
  • nausea, vomiting
  • dark urine
  • fatigue, lethargy

Once the process of dehydration sets in, kidney and brain function are at risk.

How to Treat Sun Poisoning

Treat simple sunburn with ibuprofen and topical creams, especially those that contain aloe. See your doctor if a large part of your body is blistering, if you are in extreme pain or you develop fever or infection.

Heat exhaustion can generally be treated at home. If you don?t feel well in the heat, try to get to an air-conditioned building or a shady area. Hydrate with water?drinks containing sugar or alcohol can cause dehydration. If possible, take a cool bath or shower. Early efforts to correct heat exhaustion can help you avoid heat stroke.

If you?re vomiting and can?t keep liquids down, seek medical attention. If someone is hallucinating, unresponsive or appears to be in a coma, call 9-1-1 immediately.?

How to Prevent Sun Poisoning?

A former major in the U.S. Army, Bose treated soldiers and civilians while serving in Iraq. Even with temperatures soaring well above 100 degrees Fahrenheit and soldiers carrying 45-pound vests, heat-related illness was an infrequent occurrence.

?The military does a good job of preventing heat-related illness,? says Bose, ?and we can take a lesson from that.? It takes the human body about two weeks to acclimate to a new environment and begin sweating effectively, so keep that in mind while vacationing or if you move to a warmer climate.

More prevention tips:

  • Wear a hat and cover exposed skin when possible.
  • Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Don?t overexert yourself, especially if you are in an unfamiliar climate. Save physical activity for the coolest part of the day.
  • Drink water frequently?don?t wait until you feel thirsty! Remember, dehydration can occur at any time of year.
  • When outdoors in the heat, use a spray bottle to mist yourself with cool water.
  • Use a strong sunblock and reapply every two hours and after going in the water. Some sunscreens may be water resistant, but they?re not waterproof. Don?t forget to cover those easy-to-miss areas, such as behind your ears and the back of your neck.
  • Ask your doctor or pharmacist if your medication will affect your heat tolerance.
  • Check on elderly or ill neighbors during extreme temperatures.

The key is prevention, so remember to slip, slop and slap. That?s slip on a shirt, slop on some sunscreen and slap on a hat?and have a great time out there.

Donald Trump Makes Desperate Twitter Plea for a Zombie Steve Jobs

Today in "what the hell was?Donald Trump?thinking" news, the business magnate tweeted out that tech giant Apple?should bring back founder Steve Jobs, because the iPhone's screen isn't large enough, and he wants a bigger iPhone now.?

Right. So, either no one's told Donald Trump that Steve Jobs tragically died of complications related to a pancreatic tumor in 2011, or he's talking about delving into some real dark magic shit.

He definitely doesn't know this tidbit of information, though, that is absolutely worth noting: Back when the iPhone 4S was being developed, there was originally a lot of speculation that a phone with a thinner design and larger screen?basically, the later-released iPhone 5?would be presented instead of the 4S. However, Jobs reportedly turned the new design down, because he didn't like the fact that it had a bigger screen than the 4S.

Someone should have a talk with Donald Trump now. Let him down gently.

Broncos Von Miller faces suspension for violating NFL policy

broncos-miller-football-suspension

NFL.com?s Albert Breer reported Monday that Broncos linebacker Von Miller is facing a four-game suspension, per a source apprised of the situation. The case currently is under appeal, and it?s unclear what policy Miller violated. Miller?s father told The Denver Post that Miller will have a statement on the matter in the coming hours.

The league has yet to comment. The Broncos told NFL.com and NFL Network they?re aware of the report but can?t comment because of the confidentiality of the league?s policies. ESPN?s Adam Schefter first reported the story.

The news comes just one week after the Broncos suspended two top personnel executives, Matt Russell and Tom Heckert, for DUI arrests. Miller?s potential suspension would be even more damaging.

Nokia Lumia 625 official: a 4.7-inch Windows Phone with LTE, coming this September for 220 euros (hands-on)

Nokia Lumia 625 official: a 4.7-inch Windows Phone with LTE, coming this September for 220 euros (hands-on)

The rumors were true. Nokia's revealed its biggest phone to date, with a screen measuring in at 4.7 inches. It's the Lumia 625, and it joins a series that has grown a fair bit since the Lumia 620 launched earlier this year. Compared to that earlier phone, the 625 keeps the same resolution (a slightly pixelated 800 x 480), but bumps the processing power up to a dual-core Snapdragon S4. Despite that hulking LCD screen, however, it's still thinner than the Lumia 920 at 9.15mm (0.36 inches). It's a Nokia smartphone, so there are plenty of HSPA radio gadgetry to keep the global fanbase happy. What's more -- and this is rare for an entry-level Lumia -- it also has LTE. Specifically, we're looking at the British EE-friendly Band 3 option here, alongside Bands 7 and 10.

If there's anything to remind us that this is no flagship device, it's the camera. Don't expect any 41-megapixel sensors. In fact, get ready to be a little underwhelmed by a 5-megapixel camera module, although you'll still get the likes of the animated gif-making Cinemagraph and the same Smart Camera app seen on the Lumia 925. You'll have 8GB of internal memory to fill with your best photo moments, and there's also a microSD slot behind the removable back. Meanwhile, customization options include orange, green, yellow, white and black cases, although there's no turquoise shade like we saw on the Lumia 620. It's headed to EE, Vodafone, O2, Phones4U and Carphone Warehouse in early September, priced at £200 or 220 euros for continental Europeans. Find our hands-on impressions (and a video!) right after the break.

Baby boy for Prince William and wife Kate

By Michael Holden

LONDON (Reuters) - Prince William's wife Kate gave birth to a boy on Monday, the couple's first child and the third in line to the British throne, heralding celebrations in London and messages of goodwill from across the world.

"We could not be happier," Prince William said in a brief statement, after he witnessed the birth of his son at 4:24 p.m. (1624 BST), an event that sparked an international media frenzy and the illumination of London landmarks in blue.

His office said Kate and the baby, weighing 8 lbs 6 oz (3.8 kg) and to be publicly named at a later date, were both doing well and would stay in hospital overnight.

Prince William phoned his grandmother the queen to give her the news, and also contacted his father Prince Charles and brother Prince Harry, all of whom were said to be delighted. The addition to the family is third in line to the throne after Prince Charles and William.

It might take some time for the name to emerge however. The announcement of William's name took more than a week, but bookmakers make George the favourite, followed by James.

As the birth of the queen's third great-grandchild was announced, a loud cheer went up from the well-wishers and media gathered outside St. Mary's Hospital in west London, where William was also born to the late Princess Diana in 1982.

"It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy," said Prince Charles, the heir to the throne.

Within minutes, messages of congratulations began flooding in, while crowds gathered outside the queen's London residence Buckingham Palace where an official notice was placed on a gold-coloured easel at the main gates.

U.S. President Barack Obama was one of the first world leaders to welcome the birth.

"Michelle and I are so pleased to congratulate The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the joyous occasion of the birth of their first child," he said. "We wish them all the happiness and blessings parenthood brings."

The royal couple, officially known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, had arrived at the hospital shortly before 6 a.m. and entered through a back door to avoid massed ranks of British and international media camped outside the main entrance.

Kate and William, both aged 31, met when they were students at St. Andrews University and were married in April 2011 in a spectacular wedding broadcast around the world.

FRENZY

The royal birth has provoked a similar frenzy, with media keeping up a deluge of speculative reports for days beforehand and particularly throughout Monday.

"Right across the country and indeed right across the Commonwealth people will be celebrating and wishing the royal couple well," Prime Minister David Cameron told waiting reporters in Downing Street.

"It is an important moment in the life of our nation but I suppose above all it's a wonderful moment for a warm and loving couple who got a brand new baby boy."

Outside Buckingham Palace, there was a party atmosphere with well-wishers laying flowers and teddy bears, singing "God Save the Queen" and "Happy Birthday", and children waving flags.

"The build up to the birth has been so big I'm just happy it's finally come. I'm pleased it's a boy, you always want a boy really," said Alice Durrans, who rushed from a nearby restaurant after hearing the news.

Deborah Beeson, a banker from the United States, was ecstatic.

"It's wonderful. I got chills. I cried," she said. "You know America loves Kate. She's just beautiful, she has dignity."

There will be a 41-gun salute at London's Hyde Park and 62 rounds fired at the Tower of London on Tuesday to herald news of the birth.

The baby arrives at a time when the royal family is riding a wave of popularity. An Ipsos Mori poll last week showed 77 percent of Britons were in favour of remaining a monarchy over a republic, close to its best-ever level of support.

DARK DAYS

The dark days for the House of Windsor after the death of William's mother Princess Diana in 1997, which led to public anger at the royals, have been replaced with outpourings of support for William and Kate's wedding and the Diamond Jubilee for the queen last summer.

"It's been a remarkable few years for our royal family," Cameron said.

The couple, who have been living in a cottage in north Wales where William is based as a Royal Air Force helicopter pilot, will eventually take up residence with their baby at Apartment 1A at London's Kensington Palace when a 1 million pound refurbishment is completed later this year.

The palace was also William's childhood home.

The young royal couple have become global stars after some 2 billion people tuned in to watch their glittering marriage ceremony in 2011, while Kate is seen as a fashion icon.
