Willamette High searching for new football coach

Dan Fritz has been dismissed as head football coach at Willamette High School after seven seasons.

Fritz had an overall record of 31-37 with the Wolverines, including a 15-24 Midwestern League record. He led the Wolverines to a share of the Midwestern League title in 2007, but Willamette finished 2-7, including 1-6 in league play, last season.

?The principal asked me to step down,? Fritz said. ?I think he was caving in to a few parents.

?I?m a little frustrated with it. I thought we were starting to turn things around. We had a tough year, but we could have been 5-4 as easily as 2-7 with just a couple more plays. I thought we did well considering the young kids we had.?

Willamette principal Peter Burrows declined to give specifics for Fritz?s dismissal, but said he appreciated the work he has done for the school.

?I can?t speak to specific events that may or may not have taken place,? Burrows wrote in an e-mail to The Register-Guard. ?We?re moving forward with the process to find the next leader of our football program. Dan?s a great mentor, a longtime Willamette teacher, and we truly appreciate all the work he?s put into the program. We?re going to continue building the program.?

Fritz was hired in 2006 when Skip Raish retired after 25 years at the school. Fritz was an assistant to Raish for nine seasons, including six seasons as defensive coordinator, before being named head coach.

In Fritz?s second season as head coach, Willamette went 4-1 in Midwestern play to share the league title with Thurston. The Wolverines beat Hillsboro in the second round of the playoffs before losing to Bend in overtime in the quarterfinals.

Willamette went 6-4 in 2008 and then finished 3-7 in 2009 and 1-8 in 2010. The Wolverines tied for third in the MWL at 4-3 in 2011 and finished 5-4 overall after losing a play-in game against Lebanon.

?Our overall record was right around .500 and I thought we did a good job with where we were at,? Fritz said. ?I took over a program that had gone two years in a row with a losing record and then the second year we won the league title. The last couple years we struggled a bit with injuries and youth.?

Fritz, who began his coaching career as an assistant at North Eugene from 1989-96, said he plans to continue coaching in the area.

Willamette athletic director Barry Bokn said the deadline for applicants is Friday and the school hopes to have a new coach hired by March 1.

Nanoparticles digging the world's smallest tunnels

Jan. 23, 2013 ? The world's smallest tunnels have a width of a few nanometers only. Researchers from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and Rice University, USA, have dug such tunnels into graphite samples. This will allow structuring of the interior of materials through self-organization in the nanometer range and tailoring of nanoporous graphite for applications in medicine and battery technology.

Results are now presented in the scientific journal Nature Communications.

The tunnels are manufactured applying nickel nanoparticles to graphite which then is heated in the presence of hydrogen gas. The surface of the metal particles, that measure a few nanometers only, serves as a catalyst removing the carbon atoms of the graphite and converting them by means of hydrogen into the gas methane. Through capillary forces, the nickel particle is drawn into the "hole" that forms and bores through the material. The size of the tunnels obtained in the experiments was in the range of 1 to 50 nanometers, which about corresponds to one thousandth of the diameter of a human hair.

To furnish proof of the real existence of these graphite tunnels, the researchers have made use of scanning electron and scanning tunneling microscopy. "Microscopes, in fact, image only the upper layers of the sample," the principal authors of the study, Maya Lukas and Velimir Meded from KIT's Institute of Nanotechnology, explain. "The tunnels below these upper layers, however, leave atomic structures on the surface whose courses can be traced and which can be assigned to the nanotunnels by means of the very detailed scanning tunneling microscopy images and based on computerized simulations." In addition, the depth of the tunnels was determined precisely by means of a series of images taken by a scanning electron microscope from different perspectives.

Porous graphite is used, for example, in the electrodes of lithium ion batteries. The charge time could be reduced using materials with appropriate pore sizes. In medicine, porous graphite could serve as a carrier of drugs to be released over longer periods of time. Replacing graphite by nonconductive materials, e.g. boron nitride, with atomic structures similar to that of graphite, the tunnels could serve as basic structures for nanoelectronic components such as novel sensors or solar cells.

The graphite tunnel study was carried out by the study groups headed by Pulickel M. Ajayan from Rice University, USA, and Ralph Krupke and Wolfgang Wenzel from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.

Listia Partners With Best Buy To Let You Trade Old Stuff For New Electronics

listia logoIt's getting more tempting to give away used goods on Listia, the marketplace startup backed by Y Combinator and Andreessen Horowitz (among others), thanks to a new partnership with Best Buy. When you give away "old stuff" on Listia, you earn points, which can be redeemed for items that other users are giving away, as well as new goods offered through the company's rewards store. Those rewards already covered a pretty broad spectrum (when the store launched last summer, the goods were anywhere from $20 to $16,000 in value), but adding iPads, TVs, video game consoles, and other products from Best Buy can't hurt.

Zombieland Coming To Amazon - Business Insider

Amazon has won the exclusive rights the "Zombieland" franchise, which it will turn into a web-based television series, reports io9.

It was already being developed as a series for broadcast television, but the e-commerce giant snapped it up before anyone else got the chance to take it any farther.

The show will be streamed through Amazon Prime.

This news in consideration with Netflix winning the exclusive rights to "Arrested Development" brings up an interesting idea that companies like Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, and others are becoming web-based TV channels of a sort.

(AP) ? Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are ready to crack each other up at the Golden Globe Awards.

The two multi-hyphenate talents offered a taste of their quick-witted banter on a conference call with reporters Wednesday, during which Fey promised, "We're going to sing the whole show."

"The whole show is going to be sung front to back and Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine have written it," Fey deadpanned.

"We just called up Sondy," Poehler said. "He just said, 'Jackpot.'"

Fey, 42, and Poehler, 41, take over for three-time Globes host Ricky Gervais, who sometimes created a prickly atmosphere with his pointed barbs at individual stars and films.

"It was originally going to be the car from 'Transformers,'" Fey cracked about the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's first choice for a show host this year.

The Emmy winner said she doesn't expect to "change the face of comedy" at the show.

"Because it's such a fun, kind of sloppy night, it's not really about the host giving any big comedy performance," Fey said. "We feel like our job is to keep things moving and also to try to help get the movie stars more liquored up so, hopefully, someone's boob will fall out of a dress. That's our main role."

Alcohol really does play a role in the show, with drinks at every table, Poehler said. "So it doesn't take much, you know?"

"And Somehow, no matter what time you get there, you always just missed the food," Fey said. "So you get there and there's just booze on the table and a box of candy and that's it. And the women haven't eaten for days, so they have a half a glass of wine and they're gone."

The two hosts are also competing against each other as nominees for actress in a TV comedy for starring in the shows they write and produce. Fey is up for "30 Rock," while Poehler got the nod for "Parks and Recreation."

Poehler said they have been too busy to consider acceptance speeches.

"I know that I don't need one," Fey said.

"If either one of us does win, we'll already have been talking at that point for a while anyways so people will be sick of our faces, so I'm sure we'll keep it short and sweet," Poehler said. "Or screw it. Since we're hosting, we could just go as long as we wanted and cut into other people's time."

Considering their dresses for the black-tie affair, Fey said she planned to pay sartorial tribute to the night's honorees.

"I'm going to wear one costume from each of the nominated films," she said, "beginning with 'Django' and ending with a different character from 'Django.'"

Given the Globes' boozy atmosphere, will the hostesses imbibe?

"I'm going to pub-crawl it all the way to the venue," Poehler said. "Then I'm going to try and take like a two-hour blackout nap before we start, and as soon as the show's over, I'm going to go on a 10-day juice cleanse."

Added Fey: "I'm going to start a really aggressive awards-season workout routine in the middle of the show."

The 70th annual Golden Globe Awards will be presented Sunday at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and broadcast live on NBC.
