Website helps Dutch Catholics "de-baptize" over gay marriage

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Thousands of Dutch Catholics are researching how they can leave the church in protest at its opposition to gay marriage, according to the creator of a website aimed at helping them find the information.

Tom Roes, whose website allows people to download the documents needed to leave the church, said traffic on ontdopen.nl - "de-baptise.nl" - had soared from about 10 visits a day to more than 10,000 after Pope Benedict's latest denunciation of gay marriage this month.

"Of course it's not possible to be 'de-baptized' because a baptism is an event, but this way people can unsubscribe or de-register themselves as Catholics," Roes told Reuters.

He said he did not know how many visitors to the site actually go ahead and leave the church.

About 28 percent of the population in the Netherlands is Catholic and 18 percent is Protestant, while a much larger proportion - roughly 44 percent - is not religious, according to official statistics.

The country is famous for its liberal attitudes, for example to drugs and prostitution, and in April 2001 it was the first in the world to legalize same-sex marriages.

In a Christmas address to Vatican officials, the pope signaled the he was ready to forge alliances with other religions against gay marriage, saying the family was threatened "to its foundations" by attempts to change its "true structure".

Roes, a television director, said he left the church and set up his website partly because he was angry about the way the church downplayed or covered-up sexual abuse in Catholic orphanages, boarding schools and seminaries.

A report by an independent commission published a year ago said there had been tens of thousands of victims of child sexual abuse in the Netherlands since 1945 and criticized the church's culture of silence.

It wasn?t until the book was in print that I realized that my heroine is a bit of a lush. Alwen, the noble and determined sorceress at the center of THE WELL OF TEARS, has a tendency to turn to a particular medicinal concoction in times of great stress. And sorrow. And celebration. And worship. And when entertaining. And, well, pretty much every time anything at all happens in her world.

THE WELL OF TEARS is set in early 10th century Wales, and centers on the rise to power of a medieval king whose legacy has persisted to modern day. ?As was true of ?the?ancient agrarian based religions of the time, food and drink are essential elements in both social tradition and spiritual practice in my novel.

Historically speaking, the ritual consumption of ales and wines at all sorts of occasions is well documented.?This is especially true in observing important seasonal events. Mulled wines and spiced ales have been on the holiday menu for centuries. References to celebratory spirits such as pimen and hippocras date to the early days of the Roman Empire, often also attributed with medicinal and aphrodisiacal properties.

Although pagan traditions in Britain began to disappear or become absorbed into Christian practice after the 3^rd century, recipes for ritual beverages continued to appear in descriptions of ancient rites through the Dark Ages and beyond. Spirits have also long been noted as recommended treatment for everyday ailments from the common cold to gout and depression. A nip now and then has been a part of the human experience since the beginning of recorded history.

Early mentions of aleberry (ale + bree [broth]) in my research, a domestic remedy for cold or flu, were so intriguing to me that I made the brew the favorite guilty pleasure of my heroine.

Including this drink in a story taking place in the early 10^th?century seemed appropriate, but a true and historically accurate recipe for the drink has never been discovered.?Known to have been made by boiling ale with nutmeg, cinnamon, sugar and bread sops, strained and then drunk hot, aleberry is not unlike other beverages referred to in Medieval?texts. So, to be as authentic as I could, I decided to ?borrow? a recipe from a similar beverage that still is used today.

Lamb?s Wool is ale mulled with spices and sugar mixed with the pulp of roasted apples. The fruity pulp creates a lumpy froth that is said to resemble the wool of a lamb. A traditional beverage still today enjoyed on Halloween, Christmas Eve and Twelfth Night, Lamb?s Wool was first a pagan ritual beverage used for ?apple howling? or wassailing.

In the ceremonial blessing of the orchard, which occurred during the winter solstice, the drink was poured on the ground and on the trunks of trees to awaken the first stirrings of life in the land and chase away evils spirits. Thus, the next season?s bountiful harvest was ensured. The ritual pouring took place amidst the chant of ?waes hael?, (OE., ?be well? or ?good health?)?today recognized as wassail.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a casserole dish, bake apples and butter for 30 minutes, or until the apples are soft. Then, in a large saucepan, combine the roasted apples, beer, brown sugar and spices. Heat until hot, and serve (unstrained) in large mugs.

School shooting compels entertainment changes

NEW YORK (AP) ? Hollywood is responding to the Connecticut school shooting rampage by switching schedules, adding disclaimers, delaying a film opening and presenting a somber lineup of daytime TV specials.

Several daytime talk shows responded with shows Monday dedicated to Friday's shooting in Newtown, Conn. They include "Katie," ''Dr. Oz," ''Dr. Phil" and "The Doctors."

The shows are often taped well in advance.

Showtime gave viewers a special warning of violence before the season finales of "Dexter" and "Homeland" on Sunday. The TLC network is delaying a special called "Best Funerals Ever."

The Film Society of Lincoln Center canceled Monday's screening of Tom Cruise's violent new movie, "Jack Reacher."

President Obama told the grieving community of Newtown, Conn., that the nation has wept with them for the loss of 20 children and six teachers and school staff members killed in a senseless massacre.

Grim-faced, Obama took the stage at Newtown High School auditorium to speak at a memorial service for the first graders, teachers, principal and other school staff members killed Friday by 20-year-old Adam Lanza at the Sandy Hook Elementary School.

"I come to offer the love and prayers of a nation," the president said. "I am very mindful that mere words cannot match the depths of your sorrow nor can they heal your wounded hearts. I can only hope it helps to know you are not alone ... and that all across this land we have wept with you."

The memorial service had been delayed nearly an hour as Obama met with families of the victims -- 20 first graders and six adults -- in classrooms of the high school, but the audience sat patiently awaiting the service.

The president walked in shortly before 8 p.m., gave a brief wave to the room full of parents, friends and neighbors, before taking a seat in the first row.

He was greeted with a standing ovation as he the auditorium, and quickly took his seat in the first row to await his turn to speak in the interfaith memorial service.

The audience showed no signs of impatience, despite the delayed start. They sat quietly until a group of state police arrived at the already packed high school auditorium, but then stood to give the police a standing ovation and hugs.

A short time later more police arrived, and were also greeted with applause and hugs.

Assuming a consoling role that has become all too familiar for this presidency, Obama will also privately meet with some of the families affected by the tragic shooting, as well as local first responders.

The president has witnessed five mass shootings since assuming office in 2009, his reaction to this most recent tragedy in New England being his most publicly emotional. On Friday, tears collected in his eyes as he addressed the nation after the tragedy.

"The majority of those who died today were children, beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old," the president said, pausing to collect himself. "They had their entire lives ahead of them -- birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own."

Deaths in crashes with drunk drivers took 9,878 lives as opposed to 10,136 lives in the previous year.? Unfortunately, fatalities involving large trucks, bicyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists increased by 20 percent, 8.7 percent, 3 percent and 2.1 percent respectively.

Distraction-related accidents also increased by 1.9 percent, but officials are unsure of whether that number is due to increased reporting and awareness.

Despite Americans driving 1.2 percent fewer miles than in 2010, the NHTSA says that the change in number of deaths strongly outweighs the change in miles driven.? Officials believe the change was due to better technology, public education and through taking on issues like drunk driving, distractions and other safety hazards.

We are in more difficult economic times.? People have less money to spend.?

Less money to spend means less places to go, which means less cars on the road, which means fewer interactions and fewer auto accidents.?

How much of this is responsible for the decrease in accidents?? Hard to say.? But, are fewer accident happening because people are driving more safely?? After bring in the legal professional for 20 years, representing accident victims, I seriously doubt that to be the case.?

Whatever the reason, let?s hope the trend continues.?
