Lessons from IBM ? change is the ?new ... - Sales Training Connection

Sales Lessons from IBM

IBM conducted a Global Making Change Work Study to examine how organizations manage change.? The study explored differences in how change was implemented by over 1,500 practitioners worldwide. Let?s examine what they found and relate it to the world of sales.

The key finding ?

For survival, tomorrow?s companies must better prepare themselves as the pace, variety, and pervasiveness of change continues to increase. ?When asked, only 61% of the leaders felt they were in a position to properly manage the anticipated change.

Some, however, have begun to ?crack the code? on managing change. Interestingly, technology wasn?t the answer. Rather, success was reported to depend largely on people.

Relating the study findings to Sales

1. Need for change in the sales function likely will be significant.? The study reported ? ?No longer will companies have the luxury of expecting day-to-day operations to fall into a static or predictable pattern that is interrupted only occasionally by short bursts of change. To prosper, leaders will need to abandon such outdated notions of change. In reality, the new normal is continuous change ? not the absence of change.?

These organizations and others like them are someone?s customers.? If these companies are anticipating the need to cope with continuous changes, it is likely these changes significantly will impact what they buy and how they buy.? This means that a sales force will need to constantly adjust and adapt their selling processes to the new realities in the buying dynamics of their customer base.

2. Review of how to manage change in the sales function is probably warranted. The study noted ? ?The ability to manage change must be a core competence ? and yet, as the level of expected change continues to rise, many are struggling to keep up. Eight out of ten CEOs anticipate substantial or very substantial change over the next three years, yet they rated their ability to manage change 22 percent lower than their expected need for it.? ?A change capability gap exists.

Although there is not a direct link between a CEO?s judgment about the ability to cope with company-wide change and the capability to manage a change in the sales function, the finding does send up a red flare. At a minimum, a prudent move might be for sales leaders to re-examine the plans and budgets in place to asses the extent and nature of the changes their sales team will likely be facing and the planned interventions to deal with those changes.??

3. Best practices exist for managing change in the sales function. When it comes to best practices for managing change, the study identified four factors ? labeled the ?Change Diamond? ? as having the largest impact on managing change.? According to IBM, neglecting even one factor can inhibit achieving change excellence. On the other hand, when used together, the results can be synergistic. The four factors appear as appropriate for managing change in the sales function as in any other type of change management effort.

  • Real Insights, Real Actions ? Strive for a full realistic awareness and understanding of the upcoming challenges and complexities driven by the anticipated changes, then follow up with actions to address them.
  • Solid Methods, Solid Benefits ? Use a systematic approach to managing change that is focused directly on achieving the desired outcomes.? A solid method must be innovative yet have a proven track record for achieving the desired results.
  • Better Skills, Better Change ? Demonstrate top management sponsorship, assign dedicated change managers and empower employees to enact change and recognize them when they do.
  • Right Investment, Right Impact ? Develop a clear understanding of which types of investments can offer the best returns to achieve the desired change.

A final important note for those of us interested in sales ? the study authors observed: ?Surprisingly, it turns out the ?soft stuff? is the hardest to get right.? Changing mindsets, attitudes and culture in an organization typically require different techniques, applied consistently and over time ? sometimes across a series of successive projects and often continuing after the formal ?project? has finished. Practitioners typically find such less concrete challenges tougher to manage and measure than challenges related to business processes or technology, which are more tangible and possibly capable of being changed permanently through a single intervention.?

Provisional statistics of retail sales for July 2011 ? Business News Asia

The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) released the latest figures on retail sales today (August 29).

The value of total retail sales in July 2011, provisionally estimated at $35.2 billion, increased by 29.1% over a year earlier. After netting out the effect of price changes over the same period, the volume of total retail sales increased by 22.4% in July 2011 when compared with a year earlier. The relevant components of the Consumer Price Index are used as deflators.

The revised estimate of the value of total retail sales in June 2011, at $31.3 billion, increased by 28.8% over June 2010, while the volume of total retail sales increased by 22.2%.

For the first seven months of 2011, total retail sales increased by 25.1% in value and 19.6% in volume over the same period a year earlier.

Analysed by broad type of retail outlet and comparing July 2011 with July 2010, the volume of sales of miscellaneous consumer durable goods increased the most, by 84.6%.This was followed by sales of electrical goods and photographic equipment (+73.3% in volume); jewellery, watches and clocks, and valuable gifts (+37.0%); wearing apparel (+24.7%); miscellaneous consumer goods (+19.8%); commodities in department stores (+19.2%); footwear, allied products and other clothing accessories (+17.8%); furniture and fixtures (+15.3%); and commodities in supermarkets (+4.8%).

On the other hand, the volume of sales of food, alcoholic drinks and tobacco and that of motor vehicles and parts decreased by 6.0% and 5.0% respectively in July 2011 when compared with a year earlier, while the volume of sales of fuels also decreased by 0.9%.

Based on the seasonally adjusted series, the volume of total retail sales increased by 5.3% in the three months ending July 2011 when compared with the preceding three-month period.

These retail sales statistics are primarily intended to measure the sales receipts in respect of goods sold by local retail establishments, for gauging the short-term business performance of the local retail sector. They cover consumer spending on goods but not on services. Moreover, they include spending on goods by visitors in Hong Kong but not by Hong Kong residents outside Hong Kong.Hence they should not be regarded as a comprehensive indicator of overall consumer spending. In this context, it may be noted that the share of consumer spending on services in overall consumer spending has been increasing over time.

Users interested in the trend of overall consumer spending should refer to the data series of private consumption expenditure (PCE), which is a major component of the Gross Domestic Product.Compiled from a wide range of data sources, PCE covers consumer spending on both goods (including goods purchased from all channels) and services by Hong Kong residents whether domestically or abroad.

Commentary

A Government spokesman noted that retail sales expanded strongly further in July, thanks to buoyant local consumption demand and tourist spending.

The spokesman added that looking ahead, local consumer sentiment should stay largely positive amid improving income conditions. This, together with vibrant inbound tourism, will continue to augur well for the retail business.

Further information

Table 1 presents the revised figures on value index and value of retail sales for all retail outlets and by broad type of retail outlet for June 2011 and the provisional figures for July 2011.The value index is compiled with the average monthly value index of retail sales from October 2009 to September 2010 taken as 100.

Table 2 presents the revised figures on volume index of retail sales for all retail outlets and by broad type of retail outlet for June 2011 and the provisional figures for July 2011.The volume index is compiled with the average monthly volume index of retail sales from October 2009 to September 2010 taken as 100.

Table 3 shows the movement of the volume of total retail sales in terms of the year-on-year rate of change for a month compared with the same month in the preceding year based on the original series, and in terms of the rate of change for a three-month period compared with the preceding three-month period based on the seasonally adjusted series.

The classification of retail establishments follows the Hong Kong Standard Industrial Classification (HSIC) Version 2.0, which is used in various economic surveys for classifying economic units into different industry classes.

More detailed statistics are given in the Report on Monthly Survey of Retail Sales.Users can download this publication free of charge at the website of the C&SD (www.censtatd.gov.hk/products_and_services/products/publications/statistical_report/commerce_and_industry/index.jsp).

PFT: Taylor unhappy with the Bears

Atlanta Falcons v Pittsburgh SteelersGetty Images

With nine games on Saturday night, this is going to be the biggest ?What we learned? recap of the preseason. So let?s get to it.

Bills 35, Jaguars 32

1. Jaguars quarterback David Garrard didn?t have a great preseason, but rookie Blaine Gabbert didn?t do anything to put Garrard?s job in jeopardy. ?For now.

2. Buffalo?s starters outplayed Jacksonville?s starters. Ryan Fitzpatrick was very sharp (11-for-12, 165 yards and two scores) while racking up 17 first half points.

3. Bills running back Fred Jackson started and showed why he should remain the starter for Week One. ?We?d be shocked if C.J. Spiller played more than Jackson early in the year.

4. With Donald Jones out, Bills receiver Marcus Easley made a strong big for significant playing time.

Steelers 34, Falcons 16

1. Matt Ryan threw 42 passes in the first half, although he wasn?t overly efficient.

2. Pittsburgh?s starters could not be stopped, but injuries to quarterback Byron Leftwich and center Maurkice Pouncey overshadowed things. ?Leftwich could miss the season with a broken left arm.

3. Emmanuel Sanders remains out, which has given Steelers receiver Antonio Brown a chance to shine.

Lions 34, Patriots 10

1. Detroit?s defensive front?absolutely mauled New England, forcing Tom Brady to make some ugly throws.

2. Matthew Stafford wins our preseason MVP award after a virtually flawless performance. He can make any throw.

3. Patriots receiver?Wes Welker says?he?s ?OK? after leaving with a neck injury. The Patriots lost guard Dan Connolly in the game.

Bucs 17, Dolphins 13

1. There was a lot more good than bad from Chad Henne in his second straight solid performance.

2. Brandon Marshall is starting to look like he did in Denver. He made a couple great moves after the catch on long plays Saturday night. One resulted in a long score. The other resulted in a fumble.

3. Josh Freeman and the Bucs offense have quietly looked sluggish this month. The backup running back situation isn?t pretty.

4. Kellen Winslow left with an ankle injury.

5. Reggie Bush finished with -1 yard on five carries. He had 23 yards receiving. Rookie Daniel Thomas, who hasn?t looked great in camp, continued to struggle.

Cowboys 23, Vikings 17

1. The Cowboys held out center Andre Gurode, a precursor to a possible trade or release.

2. Dallas? first-team defense continued to struggle. ?They have given up 30 points in nine preseason possessions.

3. On the flip side, Donovan McNabb?s deep score to Bernard Berrian was another positive sign for Minnesota?s steadily improving starting offense.

4. Dez Bryant has enjoyed a quiet camp off the field, and he made noise on the field with five catches and 67 yards.

Texans 30, 49ers 7

1. Arian Foster aggravated his hamstring injury, but the Texans are remaining positive.

2. The only points San Francisco scored came on a turnover. ?The offense, playing without Frank Gore Saturday, has endured an abysmal preseason. Alex Smith remains the starting quarterback.

3. Even if Foster is limited early in the year, the Texans are in good shape. Second-year pro Ben Tate has been a revelation the last two weeks.

Titans 14, Bears 13

1. Chris Johnson got a little more leverage when Tennessee?s first-team offense struggled. Chicago has 16 first downs to only 7 for the Titans in the first half.

2. Chicago lost tight end Desmond Clark and running back Marion Barber to injuries.

3. Johnny Knox outplayed Roy Williams once again. ?Chicago?s starters on offense looked sharp for the most part.

4. It appears Chester Taylor is on his way out of town unless Barber?s injury is serious.

Broncos 23, Seahawks 20

1. Kyle Orton looked terrific, while Tim Tebow had a mixed day while taking all the second team offense snaps. ?It remains unclear if Tebow or Brady Quinn will be the backup.

2. The Seahawks quarterback competition doesn?t seem to be a competition at all. Tarvaris Jackson played into the fourth quarter, struggling again. ?Seattle?s offensive line has looked awful in the preseason.

3. Von Miller continues to look like the real deal. ?Combining him with Elvis Dumervil makes the Broncos defense a lot more dangerous.

Chargers 34, Cardinals 31

1. Arizona?s offense looked rather explosive. They enjoyed an 80-yard touchdown by Larry Fitzgerald, a 34-yard score by Andre Roberts (running), and Beanie Wells had a nice night.

2. Cardinals first-round pick Patrick Peterson was picked on by Philip Rivers, but only after Peterson recorded a pick six.

3. Peterson will need to step up because starter Greg Toler left with a potentially serious knee injury.

4. San Diego?s starting defense had a poor night, but first round pick Corey Liuget is living up to his name.

Is Beauty Only Skin Deep? ? Beauty, Health and Fitness

When I was small, the most beautiful woman in the world was my mother. It didn?t matter to me even if I saw woman around me who was taller, slimmer and younger than my mother. To me, she wasn?t half as beautiful as my mother. Probably it was because I loved her more than anybody else. So to me, she was more beautiful than anyone else. As we grow up, however the meaning of beauty is twisted and turned. The term ?beautiful? is restricted only to physical beauty, although the word beautiful doesn?t even mention anything about physical beauty.

Studies have revealed that most of us tend to find those, who have features resembling the people we like, most attractive. For example, not many will find a person who looks shrewd and mean, beautiful. However a pleasant, warm and innocent face is considered very attractive by most people. Does this mean that the person who looks shrewd is the meanest person ever, while the warm looking one is a saint? Obviously, it doesn?t. Yet, knowingly or unknowingly, we categorize them. Often while choosing a life partner too, people tend to make such mistakes. When they see a pretty face, they automatically assume them to be nice. It is like going to the market and purchasing an apple. You purchase the apple that has the reddest, plumiest and shiniest layer. You bite into it and find a worm inside. It is said, don?t judge a book by its cover. In the same way, judging a person on the basis of their looks maybe a huge mistake. Physical beauty might not last forever, but in time it is the beauty and purity of the heart that stays. Physical beauty can give a person only temporary satisfaction. But in time, it is a clean and beautiful heart that will be able to keep you happy forever. Beauty is not just physical, it goes deeper than the skin. It is of the heart; most of all, it is of the soul.

So the next time you see a person, try to get to know them instead of just drawing conclusions about them by the way they look. After all, physical beauty can be spotted easily, but it takes lots of effort to spot the beauty that lies within. After all, ?What you don?t see is hidden under the skin and it may be more important than physical beauty?- Thomas Overbury.

Marin County Real Estate Blog ? Blog Archive ? Foreclosures Made ...

This article from SFGate.com indicates that 1/3 of all homes sales in the Spring were foreclosures.

In Marin County we have not been as affected by foreclosures, and so these statistics and articles that are published indicating a large percentage of foreclosure in the real estate market are seen on a much much smaller scale (when compared with the rest of the nation).

Foreclosures made up roughly one-third of all home sales this spring. While that?s a smaller share of sales from the previous quarter, it?s six times the percentage of foreclosures in a healthy housing market.

Foreclosure sales, which include homes purchased after they received a notice of default or that were repossessed by lenders, accounted for 31 percent of the market in the April-June quarter, foreclosure listing firm RealtyTrac Inc. said Thursday.

The share of the market would likely have been larger this spring if not for a state and federal investigation into faulty paperwork by banks and servicers. The probe has led many banks to delay foreclosure sales. Once that is complete, foreclosures will likely surge later this year.

As a slice of all home purchases, foreclosure sales peak two years ago at 37.4 percent. In the second quarter, they declined from 36 percent in the January-March period.

In all, 265,087 homes in some stage of foreclosure or owned by banks were sold in the second quarter, down 11 percent from the same period a year ago. Sales of all other types of homes also declined, according to RealtyTrac?s figures, which differ from other home-sales estimates.

Bank-owned homes, which are sold after being repossessed, accounted for nearly 19 percent of all sales. That?s unchanged from the previous quarter.

Distressed properties, often in need of repair, typically sell at big discounts and weaken prices for neighboring homes.

A bank-owned home this spring sold for 40 less than the average price of other homes, according to RealtyTrac. That?s up from 36 percent in the previous quarter and 34 percent from the same quarter one year ago.

Sales of homes in the foreclosure process or short sales went for 21 percent less than the average home sold, the firm said. That?s up from an average of 17 percent in the first quarter and 14 percent in the second quarter of 2010. A short sale is when the lender agrees to accept less than what is owed on the mortgage.

The average sales price of a foreclosure property was $164,217, down less than 1 percent from the January-March quarter and nearly 5 percent from the April-June quarter in 2010, the firm said.

Nevada led all states with foreclosure sales, accounting for 65 percent of all home sales, RealtyTrac said.

In Arizona, foreclosure sales represented 57 percent of all home sales for the quarter, up 16 percent from a year ago. In California, foreclosure sales accounted for 51 percent of all home sales in the second quarter, virtually unchanged from last year.

Several other states had foreclosure sales that accounted for at least one third of all home sales in the first quarter: Michigan, Colorado, Florida, Illinois and Oregon.

Panama Sportfishing Why People Around The World Love It ...

Nearly all people around the world have heard of the Republic of Panama being the greatest destination for sports fishing. The island, being a group of many tropical islands outlined with amazingly beautiful and wondrous coastal areas, is a great destination for many watersports. One of which is Panama sportfishing. Unbeknownst to many, the place took 3 million years to form.

The land people know today as the Republic was first formed when a series of volcanic activities was triggered about 3 million years ago. That caused the appearance of 1,500 islands. Today, those islands account to a coastal length of 2,988 kilometers. The seas all around and the 480 rivers streaming down from the small land formations make for a great destination for fishing sports.

Once the phenomenon ended, the result was the migration of countless of species of aquatic wildlife between the Pacific and the Atlantic. That migration went on for at least a million years, before the species settled to create a genetic mixing that resulted to the creation of newer species.

That is the reason why this place is the worlds most appealing tourist destination for sports fishers. Avid hobbyists travel from all over the world just to experience for themselves the promised fun and entertainment if they were to go sports fishing in this great place. Sure enough, it was more than what anyone would have expected.

People from everywhere gather for water sports such as fishing. You would think that only those who come from tropical areas, all enclosed by horizons of water, will be drawn in to this frenzy. As a matter of fact, even the landlubbers like those from Central America could not resist the allure of this water sport.

The place isn not just blessed with nature, it is definitely a sanctuary. No wonder Panama sportfishing is all the rage for visitors and tourists who visit the place from around the world. Read more about: panama sportfishing

Judge: No sequestering Jackson manslaughter jury (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Jurors in the upcoming involuntary manslaughter trial of the doctor charged in Michael Jackson's death will not be sequestered, a judge ruled Thursday.

Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor said it was not a close call when it came to deciding if jurors hearing the case should be kept from their daily lives during the four- to six-week trial.

Attorneys for defendant Dr. Conrad Murray had argued that sequestration was the only way to ensure a fair trial.

If the case involving the death of the King of Pop didn't justify sequestration then there likely isn't another case in which it's warranted, attorney Ed Chernoff said.

Attorneys also cited widespread media coverage of the case and the likelihood that TV commentators such as Nancy Grace will cover the trial daily as reasons the jury should be protected.

Grace covered the Casey Anthony trial, which ended with a sequestered jury acquitting the Florida mother of killing her 2-year-old daughter. Grace and others made comments supporting a conviction.

Pastor said he trusted jurors to heed his admonitions about not reading or listening to news reports about the Jackson case. He said cost did not factor into his decision, although he said one estimate of the cost of sequestering jurors during the trial was more than $500,000.

The judge also cited accounts by jurors who have been sequestered in other cases who likened their lives during trial to those of inmates, ripped from their homes and under constant surveillance.

He said sequestered jurors have reported being so frustrated that the isolation "interfered with their fair assessment of the evidence and the law."

Jury selection is scheduled to begin in the Jackson case on Sept. 8, with opening statements slated for Sept. 27.

Murray could face four years in prison if convicted of involuntary manslaughter. Authorities have accused him of administering a fatal dose of the anesthetic propofol and other sedatives in the bedroom of Jackson's rented mansion on June 25, 2009.

Pastor has noted that a jury hasn't been sequestered in Los Angeles since the O.J. Simpson murder trial.

Browns, Thomas agree to long-term extension (AP)

The Cleveland Browns have reached agreement with Pro Bowl offensive tackle Joe Thomas on a seven-year contract extension.

Agent Peter Schaffer told The Associated Press on Monday night that the sides had been working on the deal for some time and that he was pleased that Thomas will have long-term security with the Browns. Schaffer would not provide financial terms of the deal, but according to ESPN.com, citing anonymous league sources, the package is worth $84 million and includes $44 million in guaranteed money.

A Browns spokesman said the team has no announcement planned.

Thomas said he's thrilled to be staying in Cleveland.

"I am just so excited that I get to continue my career with the Cleveland Browns," Thomas said in an email to the AP. "I think something really special is happening here and it makes me very happy to get to start and finish my career in front of the best fans in the NFL. I love the city, fans, and the organization."

Thomas, who has been selected to the Pro Bowl in each of his four NFL seasons, was entering the final year of the rookie contract he signed after being taken with the No. 3 overall selection in the 2007 draft. Last week, Thomas said he was excited about the direction the Browns were headed under president Mike Holmgren, general manager Tom Heckert and first-year coach Pat Shurmur.

"There's now a very solid plan," Thomas said. "Everybody in this organization is rowing the ship in the same direction ? for once."

Schaffer said Thomas did not want to make a big deal about his extension, and chose to keep it private.

In only a few weeks of training camp, Thomas has been pleased with the Browns' improvement under Shurmur, his third head coach in less than five seasons.

"I've been really impressed," Thomas said. "The staff they have put together is phenomenal with the number of guys who have been head coaches in the league. A lot of different experiences, and they've coached in a lot of different styles, a lot of different schemes and systems. They're really focused on teaching and I think that's the thing that has impressed me most about coach Shurmur. He's a really hands-on teacher. He's on the field coaching (quarterback) Colt McCoy up for every read and every throw. He's talking to the receivers. He's talking to the offensive linemen and tight ends. He's throwing his two cents in there on defense.

"It's been great."

Analysis: West looks to avoid Iraq errors in post-Gaddafi Libya (Reuters)

BRUSSELS, Aug 24 (Reuters) ? If there is one pitfall Western officials appear determined to avoid in Libya, it is making the same mistakes that were made in Iraq eight years ago.

It is not so much the way the six-month conflict in Libya has been pursued, with France, Britain and others providing support to the rebels from afar, operating under a NATO banner and with a U.N. mandate, but the thinking and planning of the post-Muammar Gaddafi phase.

Gaddafi, in power for 42 years, has still not left the scene and his whereabouts and that of his sons remains unclear.

But for several weeks, and in coordination with the rebel National Transitional Council -- now recognized by more than 30 countries including the United States and the EU's member states -- detailed planning has been going on over how to administer Libya once Gaddafi and his backers are gone.

In Iraq, the approach taken by the United States after the overthrow of Saddam Hussein was haphazard -- asked days after Baghdad had fallen what his plan was, the U.S. administrator, Lieutenant-General Jay Garner, responded: "I'm just going to carry the football downfield and see what happens."

It did not get much better. Paul Bremer, who took over from Garner in May 2003, decided to dissolve the Iraqi army, putting tens of thousands of angry men with guns on the streets, directly contributing to the rise of the insurgency.

He also pursued a vigorous policy of 'de-Baathification', which alienated large portions of the population, from teachers to civil servants, many of whom had been forced to belong to Saddam's Baath party rather than being true believers.

Much of the state-controlled economy imploded after the United States and its allies took over, with government salaries unpaid and contracts halted. Washington had to fly in billions of dollars in cash, transported on C-130 aircraft, in order to finance Iraq's administration and pay workers. Corruption and financial mismanagement quickly took root.

By contrast, the words from the West so far point to a far more thought-out approach toward post-Gaddafi Libya. In part, Libya, with its smaller population and less complex tribal, sectarian and ethic structure, may be easier to handle than Iraq. But the shift also points to lessons having been learnt.

AFTER THE OVERTHROW

Speaking in Brussels on Tuesday, Catherine Ashton, the EU's foreign affairs chief, spoke about the need to unfreeze assets so that funds can quickly flow back into Libya, about preparations underway to release medicine, fuel and other essentials, and proposals for restimulating the economy.

"This is about making sure that people are paid, civil servants, police officers, whoever, also making sure that there are supplies in the shops and so on, helping to make the economy function," she said.

"The watchwords for us are making sure that we have a coordinated approach and it's coherent," she said of the EU's 27 member states, whose efforts she will oversee.

To try to ensure money is quickly available to the National Transitional Council, France said on Wednesday it was working with allies at the United Nations to put together a draft resolution to unfreeze Libyan assets and unlock sanctions imposed over the past five months to force Gaddafi out.

"The NTC must have the financial resources that were frozen by the U.N. Security Council resolutions," a French diplomatic source said.

Ashton said she had already spoken to Canada's foreign minister about using unfrozen assets to rebuild Libyan infrastructure and about the need to get overseas workers, on whom Libya's greatly depended, back into the country.

"I anticipate that the release of assets back to the Libyan people is going to create a lot of resources on the ground for them," she said, adding that the biggest challenge would be ensuring that the money was transparently distributed.

"Making sure that the interim government has the right checks and balances to ensure that the assets that are returned are dealt with in a transparent way, in a way ensuring that the money goes to where it needs to go: to the people," she said.

The other critical consideration is elections. While the NTC is recognized by three dozen countries, the place it may have to work hardest to gain legitimacy is in Libya itself.

Ashton said she had spoken to Mustafa Abdel-Jalil, the chairman of the NTC, and he had asked for help with setting up elections as soon as possible, something that in Iraq did not happen for nearly 18 months after Saddam's overthrow.

"Mr. Jalil was very quick to say that he wanted to see electoral observer missions," she said. "They wanted support as they move toward elections and democracy. They wanted help with the building of political parties."

That may still be some time off. The rebels first have to complete their victory over Gaddafi. But from the West's point of view, the aims appear to be clearer than in 2003.

The most important Essence Pertaining To Backpacker's Coverage ...

Backpackers experience a few exclusive scenarios whenever they consider a trip when you compare and contrast them to the popular tourer. Just look into the distinction in way of thinking. The everyday traveller stays on a fixed itinerary. Quite a few holidaymakers may rarely get away from the limits of the resort. And when they do, they are sure to take a trip to very safe and secure districts, using a excursion rep perhaps. Holiday-makers consume almost all their travel expenses leading up to their arrival and splurge it generally on transportation and hotel rooms.

Backpackers, on the other hand, savor getting off the usual path. To backpackers, an action plan is uninteresting. Transportation and accommodations are bought as necessitated and stretched budgets are very often adhered to. The commonplace backpacker likes
the thought of encountering everyday living as the locals live, usually at a more extensive risk to illness or criminal activity. In a nutshell, backpackers are fundamentally happy to live life on the edge, where most holidaymakers would like to look at life from a considerably safe way away from the edge.

Attributable to the extraordinary dangers for the backpacker, travelling insurance policies for backpackers tend to be designed to deal with those threats. When compared with standard travel and leisure insurance policies, backpacker insurance plans basically provides more coverage for health care expenses and not so much cover for bags losses. Backpacker plans will generally cover adventure sports events like bungee bouncing, snow skiing, climbing, and stuff like that. Any of these fun-based activities are not taken care of by standard vacation insurance coverage. Furthermore, backpacker insurance coverage packages cover far longer durations of vacation in comparison to the standard insurance coverage.

While you are browsing for backpacker insurance, be cognizant of the price to buy the protection plan. However above all, make sure that you receive the maximum value out of the premium you are forking over. Consider every plan in each one of the following essential protection sections to make sure you are getting your entire money?s worth:

Baggage As Well As Items

Health Care Crisis Situations

Specialized Medical Evacuation

Transportation Home

Flight Delay

Trip Cancellations

Private Culpability

Insurance coverage is a very imperative element of travelling. Without the benefit of it, you may be trapped in a scenario in which you have no way out or where you are forced upon a mountain of financial debt. Anytime you stop to think about the multitude of points that could go wrong all through your travels, in particular when hiking, insurance coverage is prudent. You unquestionably don?t want to come to life on a clinic bed having a really serious injury in a country you don?t know the language, don?t have a way to pay, with no way to get back home. What a problem! Acquiring backpacker protection gives you the peace to take delight in your travels.

Greens see red over oil sands pipeline (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Thousands of opponents of a $7 billion pipeline that would boost U.S. dependence on Canadian oil sands plan to get arrested in protests over the next two weeks that they hope will help persuade the Obama administration to kill the project.

The State Department is set to issue a final environmental impact report this month on the Keystone XL pipeline project that would bring oil sands petroleum from Alberta to Texas refineries. The department hopes to make a final decision on the TransCanada Corp line by the end of the year.

Beginning on Saturday, protesters from all of the country's 50 states plan to linger in an area outside the White House where they are likely to be arrested, organizers say. They plan to conduct the civil disobedience citing what they see as the pipe's risks to the environment in waves of 100 people a day.

Bill McKibben, an environment writer and leader of the protest, said the Keystone project would likely be President Barack Obama's biggest climate decision between now and next year's election.

"Since Obama finally has a decision that he gets to make all on his own, without the Congress in the way, we are so hopeful that Obama will shine through," McKibben said.

Opponents want the administration to stop the pipeline, which would deliver up to 700,000 barrels per day of oil to Gulf Coast refineries, because it would cross water sources that could be vulnerable to spills. Also, oil sands petroleum emits more carbon dioxide than average crude oils.

Not everyone believes Keystone XL would be a disaster. Michael Levi, an analyst at the Council on Foreign Relations, an independent think tank, said the United States, the world's largest crude consumer, could help foster North American oil production while reducing its oil dependence.

Obama's push to increase vehicle efficiency is a step to control oil dependence though more would be needed, Levi said.

In addition, the line would provide thousands of construction jobs, which could make it hard for the administration to kill the project.

But McKibben said a flood of oil from Canada could delay U.S. plans to move to electrification of vehicles and other alternative fuels.

And if Obama approves the line, environmentally minded voters who cast their ballots for him in 2008 may not be as inclined to back Obama next year, especially after the climate bill failed, and after the administration opened up a big section of Wyoming for mining coal in May.

"It's a harder case to make now," McKibben said.

Lessons learned from the two worst oils spills in US history: Microbes matter

ScienceDaily (Aug. 19, 2011) ? One year after the notorious BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and two decades after the Exxon Valdez spill in Prince William Sound off the coast of Alaska the scientific lesson is clear -- microbes matter! Despite vast differences in the impacted marine ecosystems and the circumstances of these two worst oil spills in U.S. history, oil-degrading microorganisms played a significant role in reducing the overall environmental impact of both spills.

"Responders to future oil spills would do well to mobilize as rapidly as possible to determine both natural and enhanced microbial degradation and what the best possible approach will be to minimize the risk and impact of the spill on the environment," says Terry Hazen, microbial ecologist with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab).

"The fate of all oil spills will depend upon a unique set of circumstances that will govern risk and impacts, including the volume of oil spilled, the chemical nature of the oil, and the ecosystems with their specific environmental conditions impacted by the spilled oil," he says. "However, the one common denominator is the cosmopolitan nature of oil-degrading microbes."

Hazen, who leads the Ecology Department and Center for Environmental Biotechnology at Berkeley Lab's Earth Sciences Division and has studied microbial activity at both spill sites, is the co-author with Ron Atlas, a University of Louisville biology professor, of a paper featured on the cover of this month's issue of the journal Environmental Science & Technology. The paper is titled "Oil biodegradation and bioremediation: A tale of the two worst spills in U. S. history."

Petroleum hydrocarbons in crude oils, such as those released into marine ecosystems by the Exxon Valdez and BP Deepwater Horizon spills, are natural products derived from aquatic algae laid down between 180 and 85 million years ago, the authors note. Because these hydrocarbons regularly seep into the environment from underground reservoirs, especially in marine environments, a large and diverse number of microorganisms, including bacteria, archaea and fungi, have evolved the ability to utilize these petroleum hydrocarbons as sources of food and energy for growth. While these oil-degrading microorganisms are ubiquitous, they may only represent a small proportion of a pre-spill microbial community in any given ecosystem. In both the Exxon Valdez and the BP Deepwater Horizon spills, the sudden and dramatic surge in the presence of crude oil sparked a sudden and dramatic surge in the presence of oil-degrading microorganisms that began to feed on the spilled oil.

"In the case of the Exxon Valdez spill, nitrogen fertilizers were applied to speed up the rates of oil biodegradation," Hazen says. "In the case of the BP Deepwater Horizon spill, dispersants, such as Corexit 9500, were used to increase the available surface area and, thus, potentially increase the rates of biodegradation."

Although it has been popular in the media to link both spills because of their size and notoriety, the differences between the two were stark. On March 24, 1989 the oil tanker Exxon Valdez ran aground on Bligh Reef in Prince William Sound, spilling an estimated 11 million gallons of heavy crude oil from Alaska's North Slope, which spread as a surface slick in this sub-arctic region. As tidal currents and 50 mile-per-hour storm winds washed ashore much of the oil, clean-up of the shoreline became the primary focus.

"Because of the difficulty of achieving sufficient oil removal by physical washing and collection, especially for oil that had moved into the subsurface, bioremediation became a prime candidate for continuing treatment of the shoreline," Hazen says. "Field tests showed that the addition of fertilizer enhanced the rates of biodegradation by the indigenous hydrocarbon-degrading microorganisms, resulting in total petroleum-hydrocarbon losses as high as 1.2 percent per day."

Within a few weeks of the spill, about 25- to 30-percent of the total hydrocarbon in the oil originally stranded on Prince William Sound shorelines had been degraded and by 1992, the length of shoreline still containing any significant amount of oil was 6.4 miles, or about 1.3-percent of the shoreline originally oiled in 1989.

Last year's BP Deepwater Horizon spill was the result of an explosion of the drilling rig on April 20, 2010 that led to an uncontrolled blowout of the wellhead. The spill released an estimated 4.9 million barrels (205.8 million gallons) of light crude oil -- more than an order of magnitude greater in total volume of oil than the Exxon Valdez spill -- and considerable amounts of natural gas (methane). Light crude is more inherently biodegradable initially than heavy crude and in contrast to the relatively pristine conditions of Prince William Sound, the Gulf of Mexico experiences numerous natural seeps of oil and has been the site of other spills from drilling rigs, such as the IXTOC well blowout of 1979.

With the primary focus being to prevent oil from ever reaching the shoreline, a combination of strategies were employed, including controlled burns, skimming, siphoning from the wellhead, containment booms, shoreline berms and beach sand mixing. Also, for the first time ever, heavy concentrations of dispersants were applied to the deepwater leaking well. This was done primarily for safety reasons to prevent the highly flammable oil from reaching the surface immediately above the wellhead where a great many ships had congregated to carry out containment operations.

"The deep-water dispersed oil droplets had a concentration of less than 10 parts per million total petroleum hydrocarbons that has been likened to a cloud," Hazen says. "Our studies showed that microbial activity within this cloud was significantly higher than outside the cloud."

Hazen and his research group were able to determine that indigenous microbes, including a previously unknown species, degraded the oil plume to virtually undetectable levels within a few weeks after the damaged wellhead was sealed. Another study showed that the methane and other gaseous compounds in the water column were also almost completely degraded within three months. With regards to surface oil and shorelines, Hazen and Atlas state in their paper that "up to 40-percent of the oil was lost in the water column between the wellhead and the surface, largely due to dissolution and mixing as the oil moved to the surface and evaporation as soon as it reached the surface." This lowered the hydrocarbon concentrations and changed the composition of the oil that did reach the shore.

"It is too soon to tell what the impact of the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill will be on the delicate marsh environments and beach communities in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida," Hazen says. "Many further studies will be needed to answer this question, but we can say that when oil is highly dispersed in the water column and where microbial populations are well adapted to hydrocarbon exposure, such as in Gulf of Mexico waters, biodegradation of oil proceeds very rapidly."

Based on the lessons learned from the BP Deepwater Horizon and Exxon Valdez oil spills, Hazen and Atlas say that decisions as to whether to rely upon microbial oil biodegradation or whether to apply fertilizers, dispersants, detergents and/or/other chemicals used in environmental cleanup efforts, should be driven by risk and not just the presence of detectable hydrocarbons.

You tell us: Guida or a title shot for Ben Henderson?

Ben Henderson's dominating win over Jim Miller gave the UFC a conundrum. With a win, Miller was expected to take on the winner of Gray Maynard and Frankie Edgar's October title bout. Henderson threw a gigantic wrench in those plans.

Now, what to do with Henderson? Though he was non-committal immediately after his fight, Henderson has since said he is open to either a title shot or a bout with Clay Guida, who has been on an impressive run since losing to Kenny Florian late in 2009.

Clay Guida for the Battle of Crazy Hair and a title shot: Henderson's one recent loss is to Anthony Pettis, a fighter that Guida beat in June. Guida has four wins in a row, with three ending in submissions. With both Guida and Henderson coming off big wins, it would make the most sense to match them up, with the winner getting a shot at the UFC lightweight title.

Give 'Smooth' the title shot now: The beating he gave Miller (who was on a seven-fight win streak), the win over Mark Bocek (in Henderson's UFC debut), and the close (until the Showtime kick) loss to Anthony Pettis mean that Henderson is ready for a title shot. He has been in title fights before and has delivered. Give him a chance to show that readiness in the UFC.

Now, it's your turn to try some UFC matchmaking. What would you do with Henderson?

Complete Marketing Systems ? Master Marketing Plan

August 17th, 2011 by admin under Event Planning & Marketing, Marketing, Uncategorized. No Comments.

We all know the importance of Strategic Planning in your business.? This is the overall ?global? plan, if you will, for this year plus, you need to have a plan for about the next 18 months, as a minimum.

It?s really not good enough to hold your plan in your head and try to figure out what to do month-by-month or day-by-day.? That?s a recipe for disaster! Some of us might need a little help to turn your strategic plan into an implementation plan, or marketing plan, that can guide your staff, and the direction of your business.

So let?s get into it.

The bottom line is if your business/strategic/marketing plan isn?t written down, your staff isn?t going to know what to do. People don?t pick things up through ?Osmosis?.

I?ve been in situations, where the business owner was not reachable.? Staff members had decisions that had to be made, but because there wasn?t a written plan, the work actually came at a standstill until the owner could be contacted to make those decisions.

That?s a very ineffective and inefficient way to run and manage your business.

If you have staff, whether it?s large or small, if everybody?s pulling in the same direction you?ll get there faster, better and with less effort.

It would be similar to the Budweiser horses all tied up to the wagon but pulling in different directions.? You see, if the path is mapped out and plotted in advance, everyone knows which way to go.? If they hit a road block, an educated choice can be made to get to the destination.? Simple, right?

A simple wall calendar, outlining activities and deadlines and can be a great start and a huge help to your staff.? If everyone knows the tasks and the sub-tasks, then the major tasks will be completed. ?And remember, they have to be measurable and checked up on.? What gets measured gets done!

Let me simplify all this and give you an example.? Every major task, or activity, has multiple mini-tasks that have to be accomplished to finish the major task.

So let?s start with a large blank wall calendar for 2012.? Put it on the wall somewhere everyone can see it.

This is what to do next on the calendar:

Identify the proposed dates for all major company events. Think about workshops, teleseminars, product launches, speaking engagements, and whatever else you have going on.? Color code the major events so they?re easily identified on the calendar.

Using backward planning concepts, identify the marketing plan for each event such as: Direct Mail Projects, Email Marketing, Voice Blasts, Teleseminars

Color code your major marketing steps for each of the above events accordingly.

Once your road map is visual, you?ll easily see all the steps it will take to get the jobs done, and then you can determine if you can get more accomplished, or if you?ve been too aggressive with your plan.

Adjust your place as you see fit.? Remember, aggressiveness is OK ? but craziness is just crazy!? Can you implement and execute your plan within the personnel and budget requirements you have?

This is the basis of your executable marketing plan for this year and beyond.

Think about it, you?ll know how many emails to write, how many voice blasts to do, what your direct mail program is going to look like, how many times you can mail in the time frames provided, can you add additional teleseminars or webinars to your plan, and list goes on and on.? Just by thinking this out, you?ll be able to estimate your income for that year and beyond.? And, your staff will have direction, whether you?re in the office or not.

Start with the overall strategic plan and take it to the next level ? your marketing plan.? Keep in mind that you?re not bound to stick to the plan if something isn?t working or not profitable.? Just adjust your plan and market on!

You don?t have to be an expert in planning.? You can be the idea person.? The key is being able to convey the ideas. Your staff can participate in this process.? It can be fun and a learning experience for all. ?So, if planning is your weakness, make sure you surround yourself with the right people who can do that with you, not for you, with your goals and objectives in mind.

Take in a dip in the world's most amazing hotel pools

Hotel: Hotel Chocolat, Soufri?re, St. Lucia
Why It's Cool: The guest-only infinity pool at this five-month-old property is lined with black quartz tiles, a stroke of genius on the part of Hotel Chocolat?s upscale English chocolatier owners; the resulting dark color reflects the iconic Pitons and surrounding rainforest like an overflowing mirror. Ten lounge chairs line the poolside pine deck, pretty much assuring time by the pool for every guest of the 14 cottages and cabins. From your lounge, you can request poolside service of chocolaty treats, like a Bellini infused with fresh cacao pulp from the company's nearby groves.

Hotel: Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, Hawaii
Why It's Cool: Spectacular pools are a dime a dozen in Wailea, the Southwestern shore of Maui with prime beach real estate, known for glamorous resorts. So it's saying something that the Four Seasons has one that really stands out. The $9 million infinity edge pool, which opened in July of 2009, seems to roll out into Wailea Bay 53 feet below, while underwater speakers play contemporary Hawaiian tunes. Open only to guests who are 21 plus, this 120-foot-long saltwater pool has four inlets that perpetually bubble, and its swim-up bar delivers thirst-quenching treats like vodka mojitos. In the early evening, the glass mosaic tiles on the bottom of the pool glitter in the flames cast by surrounding fire bowls and tiki torches.

Hotel: Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc, Cap d'Antibes, France
Why It's Cool: When this hotel reopened in April 2011 on the C?te d'Azur after a $64 million renovation, it unveiled a new, guest-only outdoor pool, which had been dynamited out of the adjacent cliff face. From their perch here, 13 feet above the Mediterranean, guests swim in seawater heated to a temperate 82?F, and have a perfect view over the infinity edge of fellow visitors tying their yachts off on the hotel?s private landing stage. If for some reason one tires of ordering poolside cocktails from the two roving attendants, a nearby set of trapezes hangs over the sea (near the ocean-diving boards, of course) for an adventurous dip in the Med.

Hotel: Amangiri, Canyon Point, Utah
Why It's Cool: Amangiri, in Sanskrit, means "peaceful mountain" ? and the most peaceful of those found here may be the 80-foot-high, Jurassic-period sandstone escarpment that rises from the middle of the resort?s U-shaped pool. Guests can take in panoramic views of Utah's dramatic mesas from either the 84-degree water or one of the surrounding lounges and king-size daybeds. Order a prickly-pear margarita to enhance the desert flavor during the day, or test the tranquil waters anytime of night you please: The pool is open 24 hours.

Hotel: Qasr Al Sarab, Abu Dhabi
Why It's Cool: No, it's not a mirage. The Qasr Al Sarab resort, which opened in November 2009, materializes in the middle of the tall, curling dunes of the Liwa Desert. It's a spectacular backdrop for the resort's amoeba-shaped pool that rivals a football field in sheer size. Guests often stand in the shallow end of the curvy oasis, next to the bar, and observe the pool butlers bringing cold towels, iced fruit popsicles, and other treats to sun-worshippers on the 140 chaise lounges that line the sandstone patio. During the day, the pool is kept at a refreshing 70?F. Linger until 9 p.m., when lights glimmer along the pool's edges and the stars come out over the date-palm trees.

Hotel: Park Hyatt Tokyo
Why It's Cool: Sure, Bill Murray took a dip here in "Lost in Translation," but it's the view from this sleek, 47th-floor swimming pool that's truly remarkable: Floor-to-ceiling windows frame jaw-dropping vistas of Tokyo, and even venerable Mount Fuji, while the steel-and-glass pyramid-shaped ceiling floods the pool with natural light. The 65-foot-long, four-lane pool is striking at night, too, when the city's skyscrapers light up.

Hotel: San Alfonso del Mar, Algarrobo, Chile
Why It's Cool: You can take small sailboats out on this saltwater pool that Guinness World Records calls the largest in the world. At two-thirds of a mile in length, the massive stretch of water has room for several man-made sand beaches. For nighttime swimming, head to the temperature-controlled beach inside the pool's centrally located glass pyramid ? the water and the sand are heated.

Hotel: Hotel Caruso Belvedere, Ravello, Italy
Why It's Cool: The Hotel Caruso Belvedere is set at the highest point in the sun-splashed Amalfi Coast town of Ravello, so the open-air infinity pool offers unobstructed, panoramic views of one of the world's most dramatic coastlines ? and the sea beyond. It doesn't hurt that the pool itself is flanked by 11th-century Roman ruins.

Hotel: Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jodhpur, India
Why It's Cool: In a massive, 347-room palace overlooking the Blue City of Jodhpur in the Indian state of Rajasthan, this serene, temperature-controlled swimming basin takes advantage of natural candlelight ? with rose petals sometimes strewn on the surface. The hotel is run by the Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces, which shares the property with the palace's owner, the Maharaja of Jodhpur ? who has been known to swim laps with the guests from time to time.

Hotel: Viceroy Miami
Why It's Cool: In a city loaded with cool pools, the pool at the Viceroy stands out. The two-acre pool deck ? with Japanese blueberry trees and swanky chaise lounges and beds ? features three types of pools: an 80-person hot tub, a wading pool and a football-field-size swimming pool. Perhaps coolest of all, it's 15 floors above the street, with sweeping views of downtown Miami and glimpses of Biscayne Bay in the distance.

Hotel: InterContinental Hong Kong
Why It's Cool: Set on the third floor of the InterContinental Hong Kong, the hotel's three pools ? two hot and one cold, but all with underwater music piped in ? give the almost unnerving illusion that you're floating in Victoria Harbor. After your swim, park yourself in one of the poolside cabanas and gaze out at Hong Kong's skyline.

Hotel: Golden Nugget, Las Vegas
Why It's Cool: You'll swim with five species of sharks (16 sharks in all) at the Nugget's $30 million pool complex. The Tank, as it's called, houses a three-story waterslide, waterfalls and the pool's pi?ce de resistance, the 200,000-gallon shark tank. You're in more danger at the Golden Nugget's roulette wheel: The sharks, stingrays, massive Queensland grouper and silvery jack crevalle are separated from the swimming pool by a six-inch clear acrylic wall.

Hotel: Quincy Hotel, Singapore
Why It's Cool: This glass-enclosed pool is cantilevered from the 12th floor of the futuristic-looking Quincy Hotel, suspending swimmers high above the passing cars and pedestrians at street level. At night, special lighting effects make the pool appear to glow. Bask and swim for a bit, then retire to one of the rattan chairs at poolside for a nap.

Hotel: Al Bustan Palace InterContinental Muscat, Muscat, Oman
Why It's Cool: After an extensive 18-month renovation, this InterContinental property in Oman reopened with a major pool upgrade ? which the roving pool butlers (you heard us) are more than happy to tell you about, after refreshing your rose-scented spritzer. The spacious, 164-foot-long infinity pool is flanked by shady, palm-studded islands. The water is temperature controlled, so it's always an oasis-like 84 degrees.

Hotel: Anantara Bophut Resort & Spa, Koh Samui, Thailand
Why It's Cool: You look straight out into the Gulf of Thailand from the 98-foot-long infinity pool at this stylish resort on the island of Samui, Thailand. If the views aren't soothing enough, order a stiff drink at the swim-up bar and laugh it off with the comical, spitting monkey statues along the pool's perimeter.
