Chile closes Allende case after confirming suicide

(AP) ? A judge in Chile has closed the case on the death of President Salvador Allende after an authoritative autopsy confirmed it was suicide.

An international panel of experts convened by Judge Mario Carroza determined that Allende took his own life with an AK-47 while defending the presidential palace in Chile's 1973 coup.

Carroza ruled out the possibility that a soldier or bodyguard fired the fatal shots. He also disproved a range of other myths surrounding Allende's death 38 years ago.

Allende was among 726 people who died or disappeared when Gen. Augusto Pinochet seized power, and whose cases were stuck in the courts since then. Carroza is studying these cases anew under orders from the Supreme Court.

Parks Canada looking for ways to cash in

Parks Canada is looking to make a little green.

With user fees at national parks and historic sites frozen until 2013, the agency is trying to find other ways to make money. So the agency has commissioned a $50,000 study to identify potential sources of revenue.

"The purpose of this statement of work / contract is to analyze Parks Canada's (PCA) potential to generate increased net revenue from sources that are currently under-performing or are untapped and to leverage an appropriate return to taxpayers from government investment," says a contract document.

The agency manages 42 national parks and 167 national historic sites, but only charges fees at 125 locations. Those fees cover everything from entry to national parks and historic sites to permits for fishing and camp fires.

But a study done earlier this year found Parks Canada charges about as much as people are willing to pay, "and that little opportunity exists for significant new revenues from fee increases."

Even if the agency wanted to hike its fees, it would have to wait a few years. In 2009, the federal government announced a two-year freeze at all national parks and historic sites, which has since been extended to 2013 for the general public and 2014 for commercial groups.

So Parks Canada is now looking at other options.

The contract document suggests retail, concessions, online activities, licensing or royalties, rentals and memberships might be ways to make more money.

Parks Canada recently launched its own clothing line featuring its iconic beaver logo. The agency plans to sell it at national parks before moving to the Internet and brick-and-mortar stores in Canada's biggest cities. The company that gets the contract will design the merchandise and then sell it, with Parks Canada getting a royalty each year or a cut of wholesale revenue, whichever is greater.

Other options are also on the table ? such as going cap in hand to wealthy donors. The contract document says new sources of revenue could come from "fundraising, philanthropy, foundations and corporate donations that would yield net income for Parks Canada operations."

The document also says visits to parks and historic sites has fallen in recent years. Visits dropped seven per cent between 2006-07 and 2010-11, down to 20.2 million visits from nearly 21.8 million.

Money from visits to national parks and historic sites accounted for $78.8 million of Parks Canada's $113.4 million in total revenues for 2010-11.

The agency says it recovers about 30 per cent of "the overall costs of providing visitor experience services and facilities." The money-making exercise comes at a time when departments have been ordered to trim their budgets by five to 10 per cent in the hopes of saving the government $4 billion by 2014.

McAfee Labs predicts Windows 8 attack threats for 2012

The amount of threats to PCs and mobile devices continues to increase, according to a new paper released today by Intel-owned cyber security company McAfee. The paper, which can be read in full in PDF format, goes over those predictions which include an increase in malware attacks on mobile phones and an increase of rootkits that could affect PC operating systems, including Microsoft's Windows 8.

While the report does give credit to Microsoft for adding a number of security advancements to Windows 8, it adds that hackers who want to go after Windows 8 will develop bookits and rootkits instead of more traditional attacks on operating systems. It states:

Rootkits are used to subvert both the operating system and security software, while bootkits attack encryption and can replace legitimate boot loaders. These are advanced techniques to intercept encryption keys and passwords, and even subvert driver-signing defenses employed by some OS?s. Attacking hardware and firmware is not easy, but success there would allow attackers to create persistent malware ?images? in network cards, hard drives, and even system BIOS. We expect to see more effort put into hardware and firmware exploits and their related real-world attacks throughout 2012 and beyond. Advances in the Windows 8 bootloader security feature have already caused researchers to show how they can be subverted through legacy BIOS; meanwhile, the product has not even been fully released yet.

McAfee's report also goes over a number of other cyber threat predictions, including more attacks on mobile phone devices via malware and rootkits. It states:

In the coming year as developers and researchers develop new methods for rooting phones, we will see malware authors adapting the lessons of PC malware development to undertake attacks that leverage the mobile hardware layer to a greater extent. PC-based malware is increasingly moving further ?down? the operating system (OS) to take greater advantage of hardware; we expect mobile malware to follow the same direction.

Alaska teen girl injected with heroin at party dies (Reuters)

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) ? A 14-year-old girl who was injected with heroin by a man at a party last week in Alaska died on Thursday, the victim of an overdose that damaged her brain and heart, Anchorage police said.

Jena Dolstad spent days on life support after she was found last Friday face down in her own vomit. She never regained consciousness, Anchorage Police Department spokeswoman Anita Shell said.

Sean Warner, 26, who according to local media reports served in the U.S. war in Afghanistan as a Navy medic, was accused of injecting the girl with heroin at his home and will likely be charged with murder or manslaughter, Shell said.

Police reports said Dolstad was found overdosed on Warner's bed the night after she had been injected with 25 to 30 units of heroin, identified by a witness as "China White."

The reports said she had wanted to try the drug but allowed Warner to inject her because she was unwilling to give herself a shot.

Police reports did not explain the relationship between the pair but said Warner told officers he did not know Dolstad's name or age. Witnesses told police they went with Warner to pick up the girl on their way to his home the night of the gathering.

Warner's relatives in Oregon told Anchorage television station KTUU that Warner began using heroin himself after suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome from the war in Afghanistan.

Warner has remained jailed since he was charged on Sunday with drug possession, theft, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and attempting to hide evidence of a crime in connection with the case, court records showed.

SC company sues ex-worker over Twitter followers (AP)

COLUMBIA, S.C. ? An Internet company has sued one of its former employees, saying the worker cost the company thousands of dollars in lost business when he took 17,000 Twitter followers with him when he left the firm.

PhoneDog LLC filed a lawsuit in July against Noah Kravitz, a writer who worked for the Mount Pleasant, S.C., company from 2006 until last year. Attorneys for the website, which reviews mobile devices like phones and tablets, said Kravitz owes them $340,000.

The company said when Kravitz resigned, he changed his Twitter name from PhoneDog_Noah to noahkravitz, and kept his 17,000 followers. The company said the followers should be treated like a customer list, and therefore PhoneDog's property.

PhoneDog said Kravitz should pay $2.50 per follower per month for eight months, or a total of $340,000.

Steve O'Donnell, a patent and intellectual property attorney, said he hadn't heard of a similar case. He doubted that each follower is worth the $2.50.

"On Twitter, if you hang out long enough, you'll get hundreds of follows from people who are just gathering accounts and broadcasting their own content ? people who aren't necessarily paying attention to anything PhoneDog has to say," said O'Donnell, who practices law in Lancaster, Pa. "Twitter followers can come and go. ... It's very transient. It's going to be hard for them to put a dollar number on something that's so ethereal."

Kravitz, who now lives in Oakland, Calif., eventually went to work for a competitor website and now boasts nearly 24,000 Twitter followers.

In court documents, Kravitz said he used the Twitter account in question mostly for personal musings about sporting events and pop culture and, after leaving the company, even sent out messages at PhoneDog's behest about the company's contests and giveaways. Kravitz said he sent such messages as recently as December 2010 and that PhoneDog only objected to his use of the account after he sued them in June for unpaid wages in an ongoing case.

"Only after that do they come out of the woodwork for the first time and say, `Hey, you converted our property,'" Cary Kletter, Kravitz's attorney, said Thursday. "That case is without merit."

PhoneDog's valuation is flawed and inflated, he said.

"To claim that they're entitled to $2.50 per follower per month defies reason," Kletter said. "If that's the case, Kim Kardashian's account would probably be worth billions of dollars of year."

Celebrities can get paid for tweets, sometimes $10,000 or more per post.

Erik Heels, a patent and trademark attorney in Boston, said the lawsuit may provide a monetary determination, but the most valuable outcome could be in helping companies in setting up their own social media guidelines.

"The lesson for employers is to make sure you define these things in advance for your employees," Heels said. "Don't make any assumptions because you may end up on the wrong side of the lawsuit."

A hearing in the case is set for next month in San Francisco. An attorney for PhoneDog president Tom Klein did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

Man returns $10K found at Vegas airport

A Colorado man who found $10,000 before boarding a flight in Las Vegas says he returned the money to the owner because he wanted to show his children it was "the right thing to do."

Greenwood Village resident Mitch Gilbert told KUSA-TV he found two unmarked Caesar's Palace envelopes at the airport and realized there was money inside when he arrived home. The television station reported Monday that Gilbert called the airport and eventually got in touch with a man from El Paso, Texas, who reported the money missing.

Gilbert says he deposited the money in the man's bank account two days before Christmas. The man told the television station he won the money gambling and dropped it while running to catch a flight.

"I wanted to show my kids the right thing to do. It would have been a lot easier keeping it to be honest with you. But I felt like I had to get it back to the right person," Gilbert told KUSA.

Obamas celebrate with troops (Politico)

KANEOHE BAY, Hawaii ? President Barack Obama expressed his gratitude Sunday to troops gathered here for Christmas dinner, taking photos and offering greetings to Marines and their families.

?Merry Christmas, everybody,? the president said as he and first lady Michelle Obama entered the mess at Anderson Hall on Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

Visiting troops on the base has become an annual tradition for the Obamas, who have stopped by the meal each Christmas since Obama was president-elect.

The president and first lady made their way around the room slowly, offering ?Merry Christmas,? ?Mele Kalikimaka? and at least one ?Feliz Navidad.?

Obama posed with plenty of children, including one 8-month-old boy who stuck his fingers into the president?s mouth.

?What?s goin? on, man? How ya doin??? the president asked Cooper Wall Wagner before hoisting the baby into his arms.

Baby Cooper, wearing a red sweater vest, and red, white and blue plaid shorts, reached for the president?s nose before sticking some of his fingers into the president?s mouth. ?See that big nose and say, ?I want some of that big nose,?? it sounded like Obama said.

On Christmas Eve, Obama also paid tribute to the troops, calling 10 members of the military ? two from each branch ? ?to wish them a happy holiday and thank them for their service,? principal deputy press secretary Josh Earnest said.

The president?s tributes to the troops after a decade of war come just a week after the final U.S. combat troops left Iraq, and as the drawdown of the troop surge in Afghanistan has gotten under way.

The first family began the day by exchanging gifts around 8 a.m. They had breakfast and sang Christmas carols before heading to holiday services at the base?s chapel. The White House didn?t say what gifts were exchanged, but the president went shopping this week in Northern Virginia and bought ?Just Dance 3? and ?The Sims 3 Pets,? plus two $50 iTunes gift cards, for daughters Malia and Sasha.

After church, the first family spent a few midday hours at home ? carefully coinciding with the Chicago Bulls?s 88-87 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers ? before the president and first lady returned to the base to greet troops.

The Obamas planned to have Christmas dinner together at home on Sunday night.

North Korea Projects Image of Stability as Questions Remain About Roles of New Leader, Military

Assessing the stability of North Korea in the wake of Kim Jong Il's death has been a matter of reading between the lines, but there are signs that the communist country's government is at least trying to project the appearance of a smooth transition.

Kim's son, the baby-faced twenty-something Kim Jong Un, is the presumed successor, raising questions about whether the country's military leadership will rally behind him, as it did behind his dictator father. In recent days, state media has disseminated images showing the younger Kim in the company of generals who supported Kim Jong Il.

The footage of the generals and Kim Jong Un, hailed as the military's "supreme commander," was shot on Saturday and shown on state TV on Sunday, as they paid their respects to the late leader.

A source in South Korea told Reuters that it also marked the first time that one of the country's more powerful behind-the-scenes player, Jang Song Thaek, was seen on state TV in a military uniform. Jang was Kim Jong Un's brother-in-law and his chief political lieutenant in recent years.

Another Reuters source suggested that the country was moving from strongman rule to government controlled by multiple leaders.

"Most of the top generals and key party leaders, their family ties with the Kims go back to World War II," Bruce Bechtol, director of the Center for Security Studies at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas, told the Wall Street Journal.

The Journal also notes that the dictator in North Korea's government stands in the middle of three competing forces, the political party, the military and the state security department.

"I don't think anyone in the elite would try to grab power (from the dictator) because there is a well-established check-and-balance system. It would be suicidal," Chang Yong-seok, senior researcher at the Institute for Peace and Unification Studies at Seoul National University, told the Journal.

The ongoing shift of power poses new challenges for the Obama administration, which has reacted cautiously to Kim Jong Il's death.

For the past 60 years, the "hermit kingdom" has vexed the United States and its allies with war, nuclear tests, missile launches, belligerence and bellicose bombast. But since he took office, President Obama has had to deal with the country at perhaps its most secretive point: an unclear succession at the very top at a time of deep concern about the stability of the regime.

The kid gloves treatment accorded to the North's youthful new leader has attracted criticism from some who see this is a moment to make a forceful case for dramatic reform and regime change.

But without solid intelligence of the opaque transition process and fearful of misunderstandings that could lead to provocations with the notoriously erratic North, U.S. officials concluded that the best course is to say little, wait and watch.

"All I can say is that we're monitoring the situation closely," White House press secretary Jay Carney said on Wednesday as North Korean state media broadcast pictures of wailing mourners, apparently overcome with grief. "Kim Jong Il had designated Kim Jong Un as his official successor, and at this time we have no indication that that has changed."

Carney added: "We hope that the new North Korean leadership will take the steps necessary to support peace, prosperity and a better future for the North Korean people, including through acting on its commitments to denuclearization."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

I'm not sure if an agreement in Washington over the payroll tax cut is the reason why the market is looking higher again but to put it in perspective, it's the 5th short term tax cut/rebate check agreement since 2001. Bush had his in '01 and '08 followed by Obama in '09 and this year and next. As with any short term policy, whether fiscal or monetary, the economy is left back at square 1 when it wears off. NBA fans tune in to basketball's return with big television ratings for Christmas games

NEW YORK - NBA fans seem more excited about basketball's return than bitter about the lockout based on television ratings for the league's delayed openers.

The five Christmas games Sunday attracted large audiences, with the Bulls-Lakers matchup drawing the third-highest preliminary rating for a regular-season game on ABC. The 6.5 overnight rating trailed only a 7.3 for last year's highly anticipated Heat-Lakers showdown and a 7.9 for another meeting between Miami and LA in 2004.

Chris Paul's Clippers debut in the nightcap against the Warriors earned a 2.3 overnight, up 77 percent over last year's Portland-Golden State telecast. It was ESPN's highest-rated Christmas prime-time game.

The earlier night game on ESPN ? Magic-Thunder ? drew a 1.9 overnight, up 36 percent from to last year's Denver-Oklahoma City matchup. The afternoon's finals rematch on ABC, the Heat's rout of the Mavericks, earned a 5.6 overnight, up 6 percent from Boston-Orlando last year.

The Celtics-Knicks game on TNT to open the day drew a 4.1 overnight. The early game on ESPN last year, Bulls-Knicks, had a 2.7 on ESPN.

Ratings represent the percentage of all homes with televisions tuned to a program. Overnight ratings measure the country's largest markets.

Top make-up and hair tips to combine with your wedding dress

Top make-up and hair tips to combine with your wedding dress by ying smith

Relationships
When focusing on the make-up that will match your beloved new wedding dress, you must remember specific tips. The base should be the same color as the skin. If yours is a pale skin and try to darken too much with the foundation, the tanning effect will be unnatural. It is best to keep the tone of your skin, and instead, emphasize eyes, mouth or cheeks. For those women with light skin and dark hair, take a dramatic look by playing with the contrast of colors can be a very appropriate choice. How pale skin makeup and not look like a Halloween mask? First off, your wedding dress should be appropriate for your wedding theme. The secret to disguise pale skin is in balance. That is, if you choose to highlight the eyes, for example, must make up your mouth with discretion. If your skin is too pale, but desire to bet on a strong lipstick, eye makeup in a natural way and highlights the cheeks, the result is a retro effect. If you want to simulate a natural tan, a good option is the makeup toners such as: a flush in a dull coppery hue applied around the face, never in the central areas. It can clearly be applied to your base with a good brush, mild and spirited. You might as well find a wedding dress in white ivory or maybe neutral beige! If you have no practice with this type of makeup and want to look tan all costs, the best solution for pale skin can be self-tanning spray available in the market, more natural results than creams. For best results, remember to apply self-tanner. Remember your wedding dress must be radiant in combination with the make-up. On the other hand, the hair will mark a difference, too. Do you have straight hair and do not know how to do your hair? Is it approximates the date of the party and what you spent on the dress and the shoes you have left to the salon? No need to worry! You can do curls with an iron to smooth and a little foil. Making curls with the iron is very simple but takes time, so it is elementary that you start them early enough. The first thing you should do is to untangle all the hair very well. Then you will take on rather thin strands. You wrap each in foil strand, starting at ear level. So, be natural curls and movement. If you want, you can seal them with a little spray. In short, you can prepare your wedding night alone. If you do not have money, find the most beautiful wedding dress , and comb your hair at home!

Nonprofit: Feed America's Hungry -- And Their Pets - Pennsylvania ...

POSTED: 8:32 am EST December 25, 2011
UPDATED: 11:06 pm EST December 25, 2011

Food banks across the country kicked into high gear for the holiday season this week in an effort to feed America's hungry. But a few instead homed in on an often overlooked casualty of hard times -- the family pet."It's the forgotten pets that go by the wayside," said Ann King, founder of an Atlanta-based nonprofit group called Save Our Pets Food Bank.Appalled by tales of pet owners compelled to hand over their cats and dogs to shelters, King formed her organization in 2008 in an effort to provide cash-strapped owners a way to keep their canine and feline friends. Each year, between 3 million and 4 million cats and dogs in shelters are euthanized, according to The Humane Society of the United States, a Washington-based animal advocacy group."I've had people say to me, 'I'm down to my last half bag (of pet food) and I don't know what to do,'" King said. "People sometimes just cry because they need help."But King, also the pet food bank's executive director, said that unlike traditional food banks, her group doesn't typically benefit from a resource boost around the holidays."Most people don't think to give to us and funding is a big problem," she said."A lot of the homeless shelters also don't allow pets. So a lot people often just drive up to the local animal control centers and push their dogs out," unable to feed them, she added. Some people, out of work or under-employed, are forced to live in their cars but still refuse to say goodbye to their animal companions, she noted."They don't want to turn their pets over to shelters, because many of the shelters are full and (their pets) will be put to sleep," King said. "People don't realize that pets, they're family too."One such family member is a 12-year-old German shepherd named Giorgio -- a favorite of Nadine Turner's late husband, who died of prostate cancer more than a decade ago."He loved that dog," said Turner, 57, who became homeless earlier this year after moving to Atlanta in search of work. "He's the last link that I have to my husband."Whatever I do, I have to do my best to keep him alive."Turner, a former business owner and insurance broker from Oakland, California, said she lost her business in 2009.Bunking with friends, she was ultimately forced to camp out on a park bench with her dog near a Kroger food market in downtown Atlanta."No shelter would take me and that dog," she said. She eventually turned to King's organization, which paid a week's motel bills, plus Giorgio's food and medicine."I now have a job lined up with another Insurance company," as well a prospective apartment for rent, noted Turner. But she still must find a way to pay a $350 deposit."If I can't, me and Giorgio will be back in front of that Kroger's."Turner's story is not unusual, noted King, whose group currently works with about 500 other food banks nationwide. She also partners with corporations such Del Monte and Mars, as well as the Halo Pet Foundation, headed by comedian and talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres.Since 2008, King's organization has swelled to more than 30 volunteers. And through corporate and private donors, it's shelled out more than a million pounds of pet food, trucking and mailing the donations to thousands of down-on-their-luck families.Nationwide networks, such as Rescue Bank -- with which King is affiliated -- have helped to connect the efforts of like-minded organizations."Rescue Bank is doing for pets what the food bank network has successfully done for people in this country for more than 40 years," said Debra Fair, vice president at Mars Petcare US. "This partnership is the perfect way to give much-needed support to the shelter and rescue communities and change the lives of homeless pets everywhere."

(AP) ? A fuel pipeline exploded in Colombia on Friday, creating a fireball and blaze that killed 11 people, injured nearly 100 and destroyed more than two dozen homes.

The blast before dawn ripped through the town of Dosquebradas. Authorities said they were investigating what caused the explosion and initially suspected it was set off by thieves who may have tapped the pipeline to steal fuel. The pipeline transported gasoline and diesel.

But national oil company Ecopetrol, which operates the pipeline, later said in a statement the blast was the result of heavy rains that caused movements in the earth, which ruptured the pipeline. Fuel spilled out and was ignited when it came in contact with an unidentified heat source.

Ecopetrol said the explosion and fire killed 11 people and injured another 99.

Town official Oscar Andres Herrera said at least five of the injured were severely burned and the blaze destroyed 25 homes and damaged 47 others.

President Juan Manuel Santos visited the site of the explosion and promised government assistance to the victims and their families.

The explosion occurred in the central province of Risaralda, located about 100 miles (170 kilometers) southwest of the capital of Bogota.

Images on Colombian television showed some of the houses destroyed by the blast and other homes with charred walls. The waters of a nearby stream were flaming with some of the spilled fuel.

Police officer Juan Pablo Munoz, who works elsewhere in the country but was visiting family for Christmas, said he was jolted out of bed by the explosion.

"I smelled a strong odor of gasoline," the 21-year-old said by phone. "I went out into the street. I walked at least 10 steps and I saw that everything around me was destroyed."

This is ridiculous.

I've been on this site a little over 2 years now, actually about 2.5 years and now I am really starting to see the lack of quality provided by the staff of RPG. I used to be a staff member here, as a mentor, designer, AND a Moderator, so I know how a lot of things run behind the scenes, despite some recent changes in policy. I've been a pretty active member here for my time on the site, and have accumulated a good amount of friends and acquaintances, as well minor enemies.

I am disappointed to see that the quality of RP has supposedly gone down and the staff members (and members, I guess) are putting in their best effort to help the site grow into a better writing community that benefits ALL members of the site. Which, there's absolutely no problem witih that. However, I don't think it's okay to flat out cut off registration and bring back members that were banned FOR A REASON so that we can "have quality roleplayers" to "help teach the community." But, whatever - if that's their idea of "helping the community," then so be it.

Now, I've been on the site long enough to experience a great deal of changes in people and the site itself. For my current time here, it's been pretty rough, as a regular member now dealing with all the changes and yada yada. However, one thing I DO NOT think should be allowed is STAFF MEMBERS flat out ignoring users for the sake of not wanting to deal with a situation. Yeah, I said it. And I said it publicly. I've already gone to TWO staff members about my problem, both of them admins [which I won't name], and I've gotten NO feedback.

Let's put my current situation into perspective:
The site got redesigned for a Christmasy theme. All the while it's cute and what-not, the snowflakes are laggy as hell...I complained about this in chat and OPENLY SAID exactly this: "The snowflakes are tacky. Tacky people do tacky things." And I was automatically kicked for saying that. Uhm... Since when do staff members kick people without a warning first? AND THEN...It seems like I was IP banned from the chat, because I can't even get on The Multiverse on ANY of my two names here. Actually, three now because I created another alt to see if it would let me do it that way.

This is getting ridiculous. I've already asked a staff member to provide me with the information regarding this unfair ban and they've read the message, but I've received no reply.

I don't care if I get banned for posting this. Really, I don't. I don't give a fuck if I get kicked off, IP banned from every single server I've ever signed on from. I'm sick of being a REGULAR member of the community, and being FLAT OUT IGNORED. You people claim you don't play favorites? LOL YEAH, OKAY.

Peace out. :)

Kayani-Asif talk ?pricks? rift balloon

ISLAMABAD - Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani had a telephonic contact with President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday, reportedly to dispel the impression of clash between the institutions and discuss some crucial issues involving memo controversy, which is at the centre of political crisis gripping the country.
The phone call made by Gen Kayani to Zardari during his Friday?s meeting with Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani was confirmed by the PM himself Saturday night at a press conference also held to dismiss the notion of rift between the army and the government. Presidential Spokesman Farhatullah Babar also confirmed the phone talk, saying that Gen Kayani inquired about president?s health.
Sources in the Pakistan People?s Party informed that the Friday night meeting between the COAS and prime minister, wherein the president was also taken into loop, discussed the memo controversy and ostensibly the divergent viewpoint taken by the military leadership in their reply filed with the Supreme Court. During the course of discussion ?a lot many things had settled down considerably? and the impression of clash between the institutions was erased to a great extend.
Sources further said that during the conversation both President Zardari and Gen Kayani agreed that the national interest should be held supreme and it was in the fitness of things that all the institutions should work in unison to steer the country out of prevailing crisis-like situation when the very sovereignty and integrity of the state was at stake in the post-Nato attack scenario.
They said that army chief was trying to contact the president for the past day or so but could not reach him on phone. He finally connected to him during his meeting with PM Gilani when he rang him (Zardari) up and both of them had a brief but ?meaningful? chat and both the leaders were ?almost? on the same page that the national interest was supreme.
However, these party sources said they have no idea about the return plan of President Zardari, who they said was improving after his shifting from hospital to his Dubai residence. Even some of his close confederates confirmed to The Nation that his condition was almost normal.
Some of the sources in the party informed that president would likely stretch his stay to Dubai for another couple of weeks and the fourth anniversary of Ms Benazir Bhutto?s martyrdom at Nodero would be lead by party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. These sources further said that if President Zardari returns back before Dec 27, even then the function would be lead by Bilawal.
In the absence of any view from the army of Friday?s talk between the troika, the PPP government has to some extant succeeded in selling an all-is-well impression but political observers are of the view that nothing could be said with a fair degree of certainty about the substance and impact of the meeting. More than taking it as something of a breakthrough or reaching at some kind of deal between the two sides ? the government and the army ? they see it as an exercise to convey a message to the US and Nato that they won?t allow anyone to capitalise on their internal rift.
Some analysts also saw it an effort by the PPP to convey an impression that Zardari was not incapacitated and his health to good to dash opposition?s dream of dethroning him on health grounds. They say that today?s (Monday) hearing of memo case in the Supreme Court would help bring some clarity to the prevailing state of confusion.
Talking to a select group of media persons at Prime Minister?s House on Saturday evening, PM Gilani termed judiciary and army as pro-democracy, brushing aside the impression of any clash-like situation between the three institutions. He insisted that all the state institutions were on same page and nobody wanted to derail the incumbent political dispensation.
He emphatically said, ?Both the army and judiciary are pro-democracy and I am confident that they don?t want derailment of system, as it takes years to put the system back on track.? Gilani said there were no means of overnight change, as the change would only come through the elections and ?not through any care-taker or chair-taker?.
Responding to questions regarding the divergent viewpoint given by the Chief of Army Staff and ISI director general in their replies on memo case in the Supreme Court, the premier failed to give any satisfactory answer except saying that since they were working under the government ambit, their replies were routed through the Ministry of Defence and the Office of Attorney General as per the laid procedure and they were very much in the ambit of the constitution.
Gilani, however, insisted he sees no threat to system as all the institutions would continue functioning within their constitutional limits but stressed the need of more cohesion in the working of the state institutions to steer the country out of the prevailing crises. He told the journalists that during Friday?s conversation Gen Kayani and President Zardari expressed their resolve that institutions would function within their constitutionally defined parameters.
About the government?s point of view on the Supreme Court?s jurisdiction in the memo case, Gilani said it was a legal matter, which has to be resolved in the court. To a question about Mansoor Ijaz, the prime minister remarked that since he (Ijaz) was a foreign national, the people should not be concerned about him and should only be concerned about the country?s security and sovereignty. He referred to the affidavit filed by the former US National Security Advisor Gen James Jones in the Supreme Court and said that ?after the letter of James Jones, this matter should now end?. To another question Gilani said that Husain Haqqani was staying in the PM House on the direction of President Zardari.
The prime minister stressed the need of national unity to tackle the challenges facing the country. He said that certain elements in the country wanted to bring change through some extra-constitutional means and made it loud and clear that they would not let anyone come from the backdoor. He said that government would complete its mandated constitutional term and elections would be held on time and those looking for some shortcut to the power would be disappointed. He said that in the past some people had established ?king?s party? but the move badly failed as with the flight of the ?king? the so-called party also evaporated in the air.
Gilani said that government would hold the next general elections in most transparent fashion under an independent Election Commission and made it clear that elections would be held on time and those dreaming about the flash polls would be disappointed. To another question he said that in next elections there would be a split mandate and government would be formed by two or more than two parties, and hoped that masses would elect leaders of good repute.
To a question he said that Pakistan wanted a strong and stable relations with the US based on mutual respect and on the basis of equality. To another question he said that country?s nukes were in safe hands and their command and control mechanism was impeccable and this fact was accepted by the world powers.
